@cstross my local chippie (Scottish, but not in Scotland) does deep-fried jam sandwich. It is surprisingly tasty.

@cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus Thing is, the major health hazard there is the Mars Bar, the deep-frying only adds a little fat and complex carb to the outrageous amount of sugar. If you've not got any blood-sugar issues try one, just the once, worth it.

@jshawthorne @cstross @fesshole You can. The best part of it is that I am Spanish and the first time I found haggis deep fried it was automatically compared to deep fried morcilla de Burgos.
Ed.: morcilla is equivalent to black sausage; the morcilla de Burgos is a variety with cooked rice in the mix.

@cstross @fesshole @Illuminatus I always thought that the deep frying everything thing was a slander of the Scots by the English. I was set to rights when I ordered a mini pizza when waiting for the ferry to Skye (so quite a while ago). While I was wondering where the pizza oven was they took a mini pizza out of the freezer, dipped it in batter and deep fried it. The Italian in me was were horrified and the best word for my experience was “interesting”.

I have to break it to you that it was Italians who introduced the deep fried pizza to Scotland.Post WW2 a vast number of "cafes" (actually chippies) in Scotland were opened by Italians; these added deep fried pizza to the traditional fish, chicken, sausage, puddings, haggis, etc. Until the 90s the pizzas weren't usually battered, making the bread itself crispy.
The main question to immigrants to Scotland is "what in your cuisine can be deep fried?" 😉

Batter dipped, deep fried cake sounds like something one might find at a rural county fair in the U.S.. Served on a stick and covered in chocolate syrup.
