My iPad is currently begging me to allow it to upgrade itself from 18 to 26. How much would I regret it if I said yes?
https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz I have not seen anything break in a catastrophic way. I also have not seen too many things fixed or improved, really. The usual bugs that come with a major update are to be expected.

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz Just wait until 18 doesn't get the security fixes from 26.3. It won't be that long, you can make Apple's metrics for 26 look bad, and you can tell yourself that you "had to" when you regret it.

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz my beloved iPhone 13 mini running iOS 18 died a week ago and I ended up with an iPhone 17 running iOS 26… jarring on two fronts, so it’s hard for me to separate out my gripes, but the UI changes are every bit as bad as you’ve heard, even with all of the workaround settings enabled

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz If it’s an older iPad it will slow it down. I’m on the 2018 iPad Pro and it was/is noticeable. You also lose Slide Over if you use that.

@jwz i refuse to update to ios 26 until i absolutely have to.
@chirpbirb @jwz Unfortunately, everyone should upgrade to iOS 26 immediately because iOS 18 is no longer receiving security updates, and there are vulnerabilities that have been actively exploited.
iPadOS 18, on the other hand, is still safe.
⁃ iPhones capable of iOS 26 → NOT receiving iOS 18 security updates (must upgrade to iOS 26).
⁃ iPads capable of iPadOS 26 → ARE still receiving iPadOS 18.7.x security updates. -

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz I was hesitant to upgrade to iOS 26 because of all the criticism, but honestly it’s fine. Not only fine, but it’s a delight, and it feels like it really works well for a touchscreen device (rounded fingers → round buttons/rounded corners).
It’s clear that the v26 UI language originated as a touchscreen design that they shoehorned into macOS, where it doesn’t make any fucking sense at all.

My iPad is currently begging me to allow it to upgrade itself from 18 to 26. How much would I regret it if I said yes?
https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz A lot, according to my sources (close friends who upgraded). I refuse to upgrade. For what it's worth, so annoyed with the Settings app badge was I that I created a shortcut to launch Settings because shortcuts don't show badges.

@theorangetheme Turns out that I had "automatic updates" un-checked and only "automatically install security responses" checked, and despite that it is nagging me nightly to upgrade. I guess this isn't a surprise as words no longer mean things.

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz I haven’t heard any regular person say anything good about it. My daughter’s phone upgraded itself overnight and she’s been complaining about it daily. To the point where she’s considering buying a refurbished phone to try to get one that’s not updated.

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz I held out. Caved. I now regret it, but I’ve managed to turn off most of the Liquid glAss crap.

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz how old an iPad? I had a late beta on my 9th gen plain-vanilla iPad and it was laggy, but it’s supposed to be ok on newer/less low-end hardware, particularly with more ram.

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz I can’t really say, I can only relate that I have generally found it to be an upgrade on the iPad, at least since the .1. But it definitely depends on how you use it.

@dchest @chirpbirb @jwz That trick is dead. The beta channel no longer offers 18.7.3 for iPhones.

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz I haven’t used it much on an iPad, but I’ve had it on my phone for a while and it’s mostly fine, I guess. The UI visuals are annoying (to me), and sometimes harder for me to read, but everything seems to work the same way.

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz if you like to have more than ~2 apps on the screen at once, it's a good-ish upgrade (though if you're a slideover user, you won't like the new version). otherwise meh

https://jwz.org/b/yk2S@jwz Immensely. The new liquid glass UI is an interactive abortion.
