@posiputt with enough squinting and the tongue at some strange angles sometimes other creatures' code reveals itself to mouse. fingers crossed

@shoofle "alpha mask" is probably the term you are looking for. this would be for opaque cutouts eg leaves.
however, you will have to remember to use a premultiplied alpha blending equation and make sure your textures have the alpha channel already premultiplied or you'll get weird artifacts https://www.realtimerendering.com/blog/gpus-prefer-premultiplication/
