@VeeRat You are so right. In college, I tried one semester to not take notes, but listen attentively instead, because I rarely if ever referred back to the notes I had written. My grades divebombed… next semester, I started writing notes again, that I then never referred to, and my grades recovered. 🤷🏻♂️ Lesson learned.

@UweHalfHand @VeeRat In college, I took notes in class, but they were hasty and not necessarily very legible. That evening, I'd re-write the notes in clearer handwriting, adding in things that I remembered from what I'd heard in class earlier. That extra bit of writing helped me to remember a lot more of what I'd learned.

@VeeRat This is literally how I “cheated” my way through college. Write furiously during lecture. Go home and rewrite so your notes aren’t chaos. Maybe consult the textbook when your own notes confuse you. Aaaaand it’s beer o’clock! Never even glance at the notes ever again.

The concept of just using AI to write or summarize shit for you is fucking anti science. There is neuro science that highly supports that engaging the brain thru writing is one of many ways that helps with learning and remembering.

*Also maybe we should be asking these AI zombies how much time they spent reviewing their AI writings and verifying (yeah.... verifying!) the output. From the peeps I know using AI to write for them, they don't verify what's been written 🤦♀️ -

@VeeRat@zeroes.ca It's also good for thinking. It's very common for me to write something down and discover that it makes no sense or that I made an incorrect assumption.
Using an LLM would free me of from the burden of finding out I was wrong... letting me stay wrong forever. -

When I'm learning new things, especially if I need to remember information for a test, I have to write the study notes by hand in order for it to stick. -

@VeeRat This fits the "performative processing" theory of management that seems to be going viral through corporate culture these days. In that model, the process of creating the product is prioritized over the output of the process. The end result is an expensive product that includes a lot of fancy buzzwords but doesn't perform as advertised.

Also, Copilot literally makes shit up when it takes notes. There are a dozen malpractice lawsuits in the system right now bc doctors used Copilot and its errors seriously endangered the lives of their patients.
I know you can't, but you should just tell him "I prefer my notes to be accurate".

@VeeRat You are so right. I'm sure many of us don't ever want to become AI zombies. There is little point in existing if our mental capacities are set aside. The huge push to insert AI into every aspect of our lives is annoying and unwanted. Let us use the brains and intelligence we were born with. It will always be smarter and more creative than AI.

@johnzajac @VeeRat Also the number of show-cause hearings for lawyers (and law firms, and departments of justice) who used genAI to write motions with made-up case citations. A few have progressed to sanctions hearings, and at least one to the dissolution of the law firm in question.
Meanwhile I'm in the middle of cleaning up a complete fustercluck in code that pre-dates genAI, it's _all_ down to human stupidity. We don't need any help screwing things up.

Building a Neatly Framed Word Clock
Reading analog clocks is a pretty straightforward skill to learn. However, if you’ve already learned to read and don’t want to pick up the extra skill, a word clock is a perfect solution for telling time. [povey_tech] found some nice examples in the wild but didn’t appreciate the price, so he set about building his own.
The build is based around an ESP32 microcontroller. While many projects in this vein would use the onboard wireless connectivity to query network time servers, in this case, the board relies on the user manually setting the time and a DS1307 real-time-clock module to keep a steady tick. Also onboard is a VEML7700 ambient light sensor, which the microcontroller uses to control the brightness of the WS2812 LEDs inside the board.
The words themselves are laser cut out of acrylic panels, with everything set inside a tidy oak picture frame. A layer of anti-reflective glass in front helps cut down on glare, while [povey_tech] was so kind as to implement two LEDs per letter to allow for lovely color gradients to be displayed. Configuring the clock is easy thanks to a webpage hosted on the ESP32 that allows for control of dimming modes, colors, and setting the time. Home Assistant integration is something planned for the future.
We’ve seen many great word clocks over the years. Perhaps the biggest leap forward in this world was the development of the addressable LED strip which made constructing these clocks much easier.
