It could be hindered if there was more possibilities for server-owners to identify bad actors on their servers.Since moderation is not cheap. It could instead be done with help from the users, by adding a "report abuse"-button to each post. Any user could then flag any post.
The server-owner should be able to mark some users as "trustworthy" giving their abuse-reports some sort of priority and the opposite too, "untrustworthy" for users who abuse this reporting system.
@hpod16 @Mastodon Any open servers should also have a "panic button" to stop new members to register en masse. It could be an algoritm that notices a surge of new members, and automatically blocks new registration for 24h, so the server owner can add Email-verification, "Captcha" and/ or "only member-referals" feature for new members.

@gelbphoenix @karlos would be cool if the European Parliament created a Mastodon Instance, and offered all MEPs (Members of the Parliament) the ability to create an account on their instance. I know some social media savvy MEPs would appreciate that... It's a good idea you have there!

My mission out here? To understand and promote Mastodon, the only large European social media platform (to my knowledge).
How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse? -
@nitrml @der_schrank mhhh I wasn’t aware of this complication… how would I test out how this share button works?
@der_schrank @hpod16 easiest way would probably be to post a link to an article, asking people to use different fediverse software to try the share button, and have them reply

It would be nice if European institutions officials implemented some “official mirror accounts” over here. Just in case…

How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?@hpod16@eupolicy.social suggestions:
- don't promote 'mastodon', use 'Fediverse' instead. It's more inclusive and describes the nature of the network better. Using 'mastodon' is like promoting a trademark.
- prefer to promote accounts on the Fediverse instead of WhatsApp, Twitter, Insta, ... people already know these. You don't have to abandon them as a first step, but promote Fediverse accounts over the others
- only use teasers on WA, Insta, FB, Twitter, .. they all lead to a Fedi-account. These can be read publicly with any browser, without a special app.
- give benefits to people if they use fedi, if you have the opportunity. @marcuwekling@cultur.social Did this with tickets for the recording session of his next #känguru audio book. He promoted in fedi one day ahead of other social media.
- if people argue with you, use easy understandable reasons. If you need some, ask me ( this message is long enough already )
Wish you all the best :) -
@gagagoogle @Mastodon
the panic-button is not a bad idea.@hpod16 @Mastodon Thanks. But to be fair (and obnoxious) - none of my ideas are bad :)
They won't eliminate all potential problems though of course, just taking away the worst and the most.
I'm thinking other problems, like data being harvested to "sell, track and monitor" is a bit trickier. But should be solvable partly with encryption, but not for all posts, and maybe more for Lemmy than for Mastodon (otherwise it would defeat the puropse of being a public bullentin-board-style microblog)

How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?@hpod16@eupolicy.social the fediverse is not just Mastodon, and it’s global in nature

How can we make more Europeans come to the Fediverse?@hpod16 well, I'm guessing the first step would be coming to the Fediverse ourselves, so at the very least we're off to a good start there 8-D
The next step would be to convince others to join us, I'm still working on that 8-P
