Mathober Day 2: Deviation
I call this piece, “Normal: Doodle No. 96”
I painted this one at the end of December 2021 as the Omicron variant was starting to circulate, and I was anticipating the massive wave of illness that was eminent. Here’s what I wrote about it at the time:
This is what normal looks like, a normal distribution, that is, a bell curve. Right now, nothing else feels particularly normal. I’m not sure what those devices do, but they obviously have a lot of functionality. I’m hopeful they’ll get us out of this mess soon. At the very least, they have a lot of shimmering dots of mica paint that twinkle when the light hits them right.

@paulschoe @nhok there's a good article in Nature from this year showing discoveries of animal ecosystems at that depth. They are chemo synthetic -- they live off the energy from volcanic vents. Unfortunately, they don't look a lot like the animals in nhok's video.

I think I need to learn Godot or something for the prototyping phase. Even if I end up writing the whole game twice, iterating on gameplay ideas in 6502 assembly does not seem at all like a more efficient use of time. I was so excited to get something running in VICE but now I'm overwhelmed enough by the high level concepts (proc gen maps and the dual grid stuff at the moment) that trying to think it through at a super low level just isn't working.
