It's rigged in its ways. Lobbying is powerful and mostly available to the rich. Right wingers own the media. National narratives tend to discourage honest engagement on the EU level, rendering EU democracy an empty shell. The list goes on.

I just think it's worth going into more nuanced takes rather than resorting to hyperboles.

Judging by the UK we wouldn't be much better off without it, so we better fix it instead. Which requires understanding and nuance.

Letting aside the fact that economic power already can handle what people vote just by controlling all the info the people receive. That what you call "indirect" election is a de-facto dictatorship. Economic power just have to bribe/blackmail a bunch of (mostly already corrupted) politicians to put the people they want in charge. It's fine if you are naive but please don't insult intelligence believing we all are.

Probably we should first wait they solve their own intern dictator tyrant problem before involving with them. I don't feel comfortable being "friend" with people who violate basic human rights, no matter where they come from.

El presidente del gobierno no se escoge en una papeleta (en todo caso, puede suceder que la misma persona que sale elegida diputado o diputada acabe asumiendo la presidencia).

Y así muchísimos otros países con una democracia parlamentaria (unos 58 según Wikipedia entre monarquías y repúblicas parlamentarias).

Entiendo que la UE tiene muchas cosas a mejorar en sus organismos para conseguir que la voz de la ciudadanía sea representada fielmente... ¿Pero te das cuenta de lo grave que es decir lo que dices? ¿De cómo banalizas lo que es una dictadura?

Y luego nos duchamos las manos a la cabeza con la extrema derecha y lo que propone, y algunos os pasáis tanto de rosca que acabáis banalizando también las dictaduras (por el otro lado).
