This was not just for fun. There is a big scam online of people posting fake phone numbers for the customer service of various US companies. The number actually sends you to a scam call center.

They can obscure the phone number many ways, but fundamentally need to convey that it is an 800, 844, 855, or 888 number.

So as of today on a large travel forum any posts containing characters that look like 8 that aren't actually 8 are silently removed.

Update on the fake numbers scam + ChatGPT: someone asked the bullshitting machine for American Airlines phone numbers, it dutifully produced a scam number it found online, they called it and lost over $1000.
