Dal momento che l'eliminazione della rizosfera naturale elimina anche la complessa rete alla base dei cicli biogeochimici, alle piante deve essere garantita comunque una nutrizione minerale per mezzo di concimi idrosolubili e un adeguato controllo del pH della soluzione (fondamentale per l'assorbimento dei nutrienti) e della conducibilità elettrica (condamentale per prevenire la tensione osmotica)

come il terreno con un sistema artificiale che permetta di garantire alla pianta una "rizosfera" artificiale.
L'idroponica, in generale, permette di isolare la pianta dalla rizosfera nociva, quella che contiene anche gli organismi dannosi (parassiti, fitofagi terricoli, patogeni). Il substrato serve solo all'ancoraggio delle radici. Ma deve essere garantita la nutrizione delle piante >>

La tecnica di svincolare una coltivazione dal terreno si basa sul principio della coltura idroponica, esistono vari gradi di applicazione del concetto di "fuori suolo", fino all'estrema ratio della coltura aeroponica (assenza totale di substrato).
A qualsiasi livello si applichi il principio bisogna però tener conto del fatto che è necessario surrogare un microecosistema >>
