Hi! Today is my first official day as the Executive Director of Mastodon, replacing @Gargron as CEO. I joined the Mastodon team more than 5 years ago, mostly working for Mastodon in the evenings on top of a 120% day job. I was the driving force behind the incorporation of the German non-profit, am a co-founder of the US 501c3 non-profit, and I have contributed to most of the fundraising success, which allowed us to expand the team.

(2/13)Mastodon and the Fediverse matter to me because they present a truly viable alternative to this model, by showing its users no advertisement, respecting users’ privacy, focussing on keeping users safe, and allowing them to connect to the Fediverse and beyond rather than putting them into a digital prison to extract as much metadata about them to please advertisers.

My vision for Mastodon is a different direction than all previous attempts at social media, by focussing on community ownership, Trust & Safety features, slow user & server growth, and financial sustainability - for the non-profit project, the server administrators, the moderators, and creators in the Fediverse. (4/13)My personal heroes and projects I admire are @signalapp @Mer__edith @torproject @gnome @thunderbird @ryanleesipes . I’d much rather have Mastodon be inspired by the contributions of these people and projects to the FOSS and non-profit technology world than trying to rebuild early Twitter.

I have been inspired by your vision about this project from the moment I met you 5+ years ago. It takes a lot of courage and greatness to let this project go. Su Twitter non ti si fila nessuno e il tuo account serve solo a far segnare un utente attivo in più a Musk per spillare più soldi agli inserzionisti cui verrai rivenduto. Facci caso: Osserva il numero di interazioni che hai qui nel Fediverso e lì su X. Mettili a confronto con il numero complessivo di utenti di quei Social e con il numero di utenti che abbiamo qui. E mettili a confronto con il numero di follower che hai qui e quello che hai lì. Capirai bene che gli account come il tuo, su Twitter sono praticamente invisibili
Anch'io uso Twitter, ma solo per seguire alcuni account, contattare profili che non è facile contattare altrove e per sfruttare le sue funzioni di ricerca che per quanto peggiorate restano comunque ottime nel reperire attualità istantanea.
Quanto a Reddit, capisco la grande mole di discussioni che si può ottenere là dentro, ma non capisco per quale motivo non provare a investire un po' di tempo per portare un po' di materiale nel Forumverso italiano di feddit.it e citiverse.it dove oggi lo strumento c'è, ma ha tanto bisogno di utenti che pubblichino contenuti.
Mi meraviglie di te che sei un attivista del software libero, perché dovresti fare uno sforzo per sostenere queste iniziative: non si collabora solo scrivendo codice, ma anche facendo vedere che c'è una comunità viva.Purtroppo però, non sono sorpreso.
Per molti anni una parte preponderante della comunità Linux ha guardato al Fediverso con malcelato fastidio.
Oggi non più, per fortuna c'è una nuova generazione di persone che, così come guarda a Linux prima in quanto strumento e solo dopo in quanto idea alternativa, sta guardando al Fediverso come strumento e non come via di fuga dai social commerciali.

I just stumbled upon it while putting together my "year in photos" album (my traditional Christmas gift to family). I don't think this pic will make the cut, but I find it very soothing to look at.
