The one thing that I just fail to get, is that federation needs to be explained to people, when it's a concept that pretty much everyone is familiar with.
Have a (mobile) phone? You're federating. Have an email address? You're federating. Have an internet connection? That's federated.
People understand that you don't have to be on the same (mobile) phone network, with the same email provider, the same ISP, in order to communicate with others. Many daily services work, regardless of the provider you're with, where you can pick and choose and leave, without anything changing.
So why is it so insanely difficult to apply this concept to #XMPP messaging or anything on the #Fediverse?
It drives me crazy sometimes.
