While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.
Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.
My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

@Pepijn I think so? It might have only been a pony? Unsure. I was and am still very small, so they all seemed just massive creatures.

@Pepijn I grew up with neighbors who had horses, so I rode them quite a lot (mostly the nice girl Dusty, not her sorta asshole stallion Smoke; on a good day he'd let a boy on but he was unimpressed).
I do live rural but not enough to really justify a horse of my own.
How are city people ever gonna see a horse? With cops?

My mom used to do riding and sometimes I came too and got to ride. Its really fun but kinda scary

note: the question is not "have your rich parents paid 50.000 of your local currency on gloriously expensive horse lessons and then you went on a skiing holiday". The question is: "have you sat on a horse".

Cow = not horse, wrong thread.
And yes, as many people point out: that school-trip to an inner-city petting school where all six yr olds sat on Alfiiiii!! the sturdy mini-horse = yes, I've sat on a horse.

@Pepijn Once only. As a teenager. I was taken on a ride as part of a tourist trip.
The horse spent most of the walk trying to screw one of the other horses. I refused to mount up again for the trip back and walked in preference.

@Pepijn Remember those (now ghastly) ponies at the various fairs went round and round? That was my first "horse" experience a long, long time ago.

@Pepijn I've never done that as far as I know. But all my children got the possibility and used it at least once. I guess i even won't do it either, I'm not interested in horses, dogs or cats, sometimes i doubt the concept of modern pets.

@Pepijn yes. My dad is friends with a rancher who competes in cutting, and weโd make the drive out to visit him once every few years. The first time, they didnโt give me a saddle, just told me to hold on, and they walked the horse on the rope. I slipped around the side. Iโve watched him and his sons compete, though. I think the last time I was there, they were hosting a rodeo.
Also, that one time at Girl Scouts.

@robynredbreast @diazona we still have Arabbers selling fresh produce out of horse-drawn carts here in #Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Weโre not that far away from the time when horses were a major mode of transportation.

@Pepijn it depends on where people grew up and when. Many people who've grown up in cities haven't been to areas with horse riding. Unless they're rich enough for holidays with horse riding included this won't factor into their lives.
@Kay Scouting and possibly other summer camps might offer such a thing. I got to attend a Girl Scout camp that was specifically horse-focused. We weren't rich by any stretch.
Also, I grew up in Houston TX, but there are plenty of rural areas in and around it where people have horses. I even owned one for a little while.
