Hi #fediverse. We need to talk about something.
While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.
Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.
My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

@Pepijn My Dad had me on a horse at age two. He and the stable master got involved in a conversation, and meanwhile the horse apparently got tired of waiting, so he took off with me in the saddle. By the time Dad organized a search party the horse brought me back. I was laughing and having a great time! He didn’t tell Mom until years after they were divorced, as he was afraid she would have clobbered him. She probably would have. I still love riding!

@Pepijn Yes, but I grew up in a rural area where people not only owned horses they used them for work in some capacities (and still do).

@Pepijn I did when I was in kindergarten in the early 80s and I freaked out, never bothered to try again. Only reason I was there was a school field trip to a ranch. My own kid hasn't been on one.

@Pepijn My grandparents had a steer in the lot by the house when I was 5 or 6, and I used to climb on the fence to get on the steer's back. He didn't really care. I been on more than a few horses. Never rode a pig.

@Pepijn I was raised on a Dairy farm. I got a dapple-grey pony for my 12th Birthday. I named him Tosca, after my favorite chocky bar at the time. Though, "why" is lost to the mists of time! 🤔 🤷♂️

@Kay Scouting and possibly other summer camps might offer such a thing. I got to attend a Girl Scout camp that was specifically horse-focused. We weren't rich by any stretch.
Also, I grew up in Houston TX, but there are plenty of rural areas in and around it where people have horses. I even owned one for a little while.
@solitha @Pepijn Wealth is comparative. Not criticising but people who've never missed a meal may not regard food security as wealth. Someone whose family relies on foodbanks for food, or who has to go from one casual job to the next, may see the idea of a holiday as unachievable.
Getting to Scouts or Girl Guides may be a luxury. I tried to get that for my own kid but local groups have closed down (not enough volunteers) and transport time and costs were too much for groups in nearby city. My kid's aged out now and has no interst in horses anyway.
It may be luck as much as wealth too. My cousins weren't wealthier than me or my brother but they grew up in a rural area where riding horses was easy. Neighbours were farmers with a few horse for working livestock.
I learned to ride along with younger friends. My brother wasn't interested so he didn't bother.

@Pepijn I once sat on a Galapagos giant tortoise. I kind of feel guilty about it now, because maybe I was too heavy? It's probably still alive, I could go apologize.

I may be on the high end -- my parents owned horses when I was young and I took riding lessons for a year in middle school, so I went a little beyond just sitting. (Lessons included proper horse care! These were probably not the absurdly expensive lessons...)
