Hi #fediverse.

Hi #fediverse. We need to talk about something.
While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.
Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.
My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

Have you sat on a horse?
Please boost for scientific accuracy.
@Pepijn i never sat on a cow but i have petted and attempted to milk a cow. i say attempted because i was young and i couldnt get the hand motion right and probably didnt have the grip strength. have sat on a horse a couple of times at day care for pictures and i feel like at either a renn faire or girl scout camp of some kind where they led us around in a circle lol

@solitha @Pepijn Wealth is comparative. Not criticising but people who've never missed a meal may not regard food security as wealth. Someone whose family relies on foodbanks for food, or who has to go from one casual job to the next, may see the idea of a holiday as unachievable.
Getting to Scouts or Girl Guides may be a luxury. I tried to get that for my own kid but local groups have closed down (not enough volunteers) and transport time and costs were too much for groups in nearby city. My kid's aged out now and has no interst in horses anyway.
It may be luck as much as wealth too. My cousins weren't wealthier than me or my brother but they grew up in a rural area where riding horses was easy. Neighbours were farmers with a few horse for working livestock.
I learned to ride along with younger friends. My brother wasn't interested so he didn't bother.
@Kay I understand all that.
Of course we were better off than a family suffering from food insecurity or worse.
But "rich" is more of an objective term, an upper class tier.
Even considering it as comparative wealth, we were perhaps average or maybe a bit below in relation to the families of our time and city. Even without the many stables around, access to horses was not out of reach for most.
But the "where" and "when" most definitely matter, as you said.

@Pepijn It was lo these many years ago but, yes, I have sat on a horse at least once.
I have also fallen OFF a horse at least once, which may very well be why it was only ever ONCE…

@solitha Some countries and regions don't have horses so riding them would be a pipe dream

@Kay Whole countries with no horses at all? Like where?
-
@Pepijn i am available if someone needs to sit on me
-
@Kay Whole countries with no horses at all? Like where?
@solitha Maybe I should have said few horses. No horses in Arctic and Antarctic areas. Few horses on small island countries like Tuvalu and Tokelau Islands. Few horses in countries plagued by famine and extreme weather, like parts of Africa. Few horses in countries with pests like Tsetse flies which kill horses (Africa again).

@Pepijn
We had to ride the pigs before we got a pony ...then as we aged we got horses according to size
There was a pack string across the road on a couple hundred acres so I rode them all , one time the owners saw me and I just ran the whole herd up to the woods and got away.
My bridle was a piece of twine. -

@Pepijn I said yes, but I was very young and it was probably a pony.

@deadDuck @diazona @robynredbreast this is *extremely* Tracy. 😅
-
@diazona When's your birthday? I think we could make this happen.
@deadDuck @josh0 @robynredbreast Hehe, well, you'll be waiting a while, although I'd have a hard time turning down any excuse for cake!
-
@Pepijn Also a lion, an elephant, and several large dogs.
@ruemaleficent @Pepijn you’ve sat on a lion??!!
Please elaborate. The Fediverse demands to know.
-
@Pepijn not on a horse but on an elephant
-
@Pepijn this data is skewed. Theres no way that many people have sat on a horse outside of the Midwest and or south.
@thejacenallen @Pepijn The pony ride down the field at my school bazaar when I was 7 counts as "I have sat on a horse"
