guys, what’s the coolest first name you’ve ever seen or heard in person?
-
@roknrol I don't have autism as an excuse, I just don't see the point of lying about her or pretending I'm sad she's gone. She didn't deserve that.
I think people really are thinking about their own family when they react, and I think a lot of them are coming from a place of privilege where they have nice families they get along well with, and can't seem to comprehend that some of us are related to irredeemable arseholes.
@astronomerritt I think you're right. They want to be remembered well and think about all the nasty shit that they have done.
-
@Emmacox Cornish names are fabulous. I'm always going to be biased towards Brittonic and Celtic names, I think. Breton names are cool as hell too.
@astronomerritt oh they are. I do tend to peruse them for inspiration when I'm making up fantasy names.
-
@roknrol ...not that I'm saying autism is an excuse. That came out wrong 😖
@astronomerritt I figured 🙂
I was just saying i was autistic because there's very little about myself that's 'too personal' to share
-
@sar That's got to be where the parents got the name from, right?
@astronomerritt @sar Not big enough fans if they missed the fact that Morse was so embarrassed about it that he never used it.

guys, what’s the coolest first name you’ve ever seen or heard in person? doesn’t have to be a name you’d give your own kid, just something that made you go “damn, what a cool name”.
I ask because one of my nephew’s besties is called Endeavour and that is a COOL name.
(his mates call him Noun, which is hilarious)
@astronomerritt I know someone called ‘Jim Slaine’ - Jim is not overly cool, but the 2 names together sound like a cowboy from a classic western.

@DrChris Oooh, I can definitely hear that being snarled by some dodgy tobacco-chewing type as Jim himself strides into the saloon.

Nigerians have the best first names and it's not close. I knew a guy called Truth.
Like, lots of languages have names which translate as "Truth", but using the word itself is just far more interesting.

@passenger I don't disagree. And "Truth" is an AMAZING name.

@hedders Oh dear. Bless their little hearts. I do think a lot of these virtue names are a lot to saddle a child with. What if Unique wants to be basic?
@astronomerritt heh. Yeah. It’s like that Pratchett joke about how Bestiality Carter got his name.

@hedders Exactly!

@emma_cogdev I think a lot of the non-binary names are blunter and less "pretty", if that makes sense? There seems to be more of a willingness to name yourself after something that maybe isn't conventionally or universally pleasing.
I also met a Winter recently! Also non-binary, and an extremely cool person.
Yes, I think you're right! I think that's why I like them.

@astronomerritt were his parents Morse fans?
My friend has a kid called Onyx. I just think it's lovely, and somehow much nicer than more traditional gem stone names like Ruby or Crystal. -

@astronomerritt I went to an international school so I am not surprised at any name. I guess Sheba maybe.
-
@astronomerritt They really should just call him Morse.

@sar @astronomerritt Morse hated it
-
@futurebird @astronomerritt his parents really hate computers, huh?

Onyx is FABULOUS. I love gemstone names anyway, but Onyx is especially cool.

@missmelanieh Sheba is pretty great!
I guess I was more asking for names people personally thought were very cool: these are always going to be objective. Like, some people might find an Irish name like Saoirse cool, and that would be valid for them, but I know loads of 'em. 😆

@astronomerritt I like southern European names in general. Maybe it is the whole Latinos being sexy trope though.
