I hit play on Predator.

I hit play on Predator.
Yes, the original one.
Visually, this movie looks better than anything I have seen in the last... 6?... 8?... Years... Maybe more.
Every frame looks like a million bucks (and probably was).

When did movies start to feel unreal for you? Which movie has your favorite special effects? Is there a special effects heavy movie you consider the epitome of the genre?

@afreytes you should watch Carpenter’s The Thing too, it’s still totally mind blowing and has way better effects than anything in the last 25 years
-
@AlexanderVI @afreytes I saw a video about this specific question maybe a week ago and according to it, it’s actually because scenes aren’t planned anymore. Everything is filmed on green screen using a middle-length lens and average lighting so that can be applied to any background, with lighting added virtually, after the fact. It notably gave the example of a scene happening in a forest in the movie ad, but in the city in the movie itself.

@afreytes I had the predator on VHS and must have seen it 72 times as a teenager. Strikes the right balance between a war movie and a thriller. Love it.
Re: movies feeling unreal: If a movie is good, then you won't mind the odd visual effect being off. I recently saw a very nice b-movie. The effects were mediocre, but because there were good ideas in the screenplay, I didn't mind.
Favorite special effects movies: Star Wars, Jurassic Park, The Matrix.

@abban I have seen The Thing way more times than I should!

@AlexanderVI oy, I haven't seen Sorcerer in a long long LONG time. I will seek it out.

@afreytes
I am ashamed to admit something so pedestrian but it would probably be Wrath of Khan.
It was all the more impressive when I learned years later that Harve Bennett was hired because he knew how to live within budgets - and he did. -

@afreytes the 80's version of the Blob.
Absolutely god damn awful and scary. Still real looking.
-
@AlexanderVI that's so sad

@afreytes yup, still looks better than anything since in my book

@afreytes You know what I like about Predator? I can understand all the dialogue without my ears being blown off in the action scenes.

@afreytes @chongliss that Blob movie is so good! I have huge nostalgia for it. Somehow my mam was able to afford a C64 and a TV for me one Christmas, she must have saved all year, and I used to fall asleep watching the RTE midweek movie in bed for years after. I saw so many cool weird movies that way

@afreytes Not sure it's favourite, or best, but I think the movie that made the largest impression on me from a visual effects standpoint is probably "2010: The Year We Make Contact".
The stark, sharp lighting of the space shots, and the attention to detail put into almost every frame... it was a big influence when I did 3D modelling and rendering years later.

@abban @afreytes I watched it with my brother when I was around 8. I was traumatised for months. We had family visiting at the time, and my Uncle Pat was a big tall man (looked like a Garda but was security in Dublin Castle), and the whole time I kept thinking, "It's okay, it's okay, Uncle Pat will save us if the Blob attacks!"
And also, kids aren't supposed to die in horror movies, and by jove did one of this kids get it bad!

@chongliss @abban Yes, that's how The Stuff goes.
I stopped eating ice cream for a long time after that.
