I don't celebrate holidays. ∃ much work to do for non-profit charities (for fundraising alone) in Dec. Working on holidays is standard practice for me since 2001.

My 17-year-younger cousin told me: 1ˢᵗ he saw SQL was at 12 years old & watched me all Christmas day mucking w/ #FSF's SQL donor database in 2002.

*But*, my mom, who died ≈ 10 yrs ago, loved Christmas & she hated that I worked every Christmas. So, in her memory, I listen to Christmas music all day today while working.

For the rest of the day, I'll review holiday music here in this thread. This whole week every year, I don't play any other music except holiday music.

One key rule: If the song you perform was written during the lifetime of ANYONE ALIVE TODAY, please STFU!!

IOW, Greensleves was written circa 1580 so it's up for grabs for all artists, but as mentioned earlier this month: Taylor Swift's Last Christmas should never be played again.

So, let's talk about Maria Carey's “All I want for Christmas is You”.
My best review: this song is “unoffensive”. I can't say I like it, but I do not turn it off when I hear it.
It's ultimately a love song! Despite that it's made millions for Maria & her producer, it's ultimately anti-commercialism: All I want for Christmas is you to be here w/me: not presents.

This one's not horrible. I'll continue listing more holiday songs that I progressively like more as the night continues.

@bkuhn I find it very moving. There is a story that, during the Iraq War, military spouses made it a hit long after its 1994 release. I don't think that's backed by any evidence, but it definitely deepens the emotional impact of the song.
