I just recompressed a bunch of old .tar.bz2 archives as .tar.xz in case it compressed a bit better.
Before: 630 MB. After: 13 MB.
That's not a typo. The new files are smaller than the old ones by a factor of 50. There must be something _extremely_ compressible in there which only xz is able to take advantage of!

@simontatham The max block size of bzip2 is only 900k. XZ window sizes are normally much larger. Might be enough to explain big part of the difference, especially with highly redundant data.
