Hokay, I've launched a webapp at https://discoverfedi.app
What's it do?
- Let's you browse the federated timeline of a selected instance (use the change instance button to switch to something else, with mastodon.social being the default)
- Can switch to image-only view for a more "instagram" kind of feels
- Search the entire federated network (uses the fedi observer api, is a bit wonky and am still working out the kinks)
- Search hashtags on the instance you're currently viewing
- Save the instance you're viewing to "favorites" (stored as a cookie)
- Show/hide NSFW content
- Uses GardenFence to block harmful instances from being accessed in the search and display (although blocked content may show up in an instance's federated timeline, this is one of those dents in the development that need un-dented)
- Light and dark theme changed manually, or adjusted to system settings
- Requires no logon credentials, no registration, since many many many instances are publicly visible
- Works nice on a phone
Issues:
- Some instances may return an error
- Some instances may not display properly, especially across different software
- Search is a bit funky
Why?
People outside of the fediverse always complaining about how difficult it is to see what the heck the fediverse is, or choose servers. Well, the problem? There's well over 20,000+ servers, and this may or may not fix the issue of "finding things" lol
This could be an iOS/Android app, but I don't feel like paying Apple or Google money for dev accounts

@gubi I'm still working out some issues with the search function, but if you type sociale.network into the "change instance" dialogue, it should show you the timeline easy peasy

@cmdr_nova the procedure you suggested is working, but the "find instance" search returns empty results for sociale.network...

@gubi yeah, that's something i need to work on, because the search function is only looking through the instances that are currently loaded rather than the 20,000+ directory (it was very slow with it searching through this and I haven't figured out a workaround yet)

@cmdr_nova you could fetch daily o weekly a list of known public instances and use for search your local list instead of browsing the entire fediverse... or some other hattrick thay you could surely figure out. Good luck and keep up the good work!
