Our elementary district's policy is that the first legit snow day -not for extreme cold or a burst pipe- is a full cancelation for kids to play and have the day. After that, they do e-learning days, which is good so summer break can start on time.

I could see maybe MAYBE making it a day where kids who need extra help can set up small meetings to get extra help.
Something like "office hours all day"
But you are correct that the kids who need that most? They don't have wifi at home that's working right now. They don't have a laptop.
That would be fair. It could lead to a few kids getting the extra attention they need.

We were put here to enjoy life. To enjoy friends and family. To relax and have fun.
Working to death for some company that will never give a shit about you is one of the dumbest goals anyone could ever have.
Planning to work until you're 70 or 75 is ridiculous.
We should be figuring out how we can work less not more.

I'm an old guy, and I still remember my grade school snow days with pleasure. Excitement, freedom, joy. Eagerly listening to the morning radio to find out if my school was on the closed list. Those are good memories.

@futurebird I think I'd be okay with it if there's more than two consecutive days of snow. Otherwise, seems like a lot of effort for nowhere near enough gain.

@futurebird I had that thought while shoveling snow. Even when they are expected, they are unexpected; the clock stops, and you don’t come back in until you are more hungry than wet and tired.

@futurebird Yeah. A snow day is a snow day. A kid should be playing in the snow instead of having a virtual school day. If that means school lasts until June so be it. We did it. So can they.

@futurebird It's so ridiculous. If I were a parent in the Year of our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty-Six, I would simply shut the laptop and tell my kid(s) to go play in the snow. "Sorry, they won't be online today, they're 'sick'. Yeah, bad cold, going around. They'll be fine tomorrow."
Everyone needs a break, and no break hits quite like a snow day when you're a li'l nine-year-old. I have so many fond snow day memories. Kids have enough going on. We should let them take a day off to be kids.

@halcy and this flattening isn't necessarily a bad thing. I picked up the term "art directable" from one of the Blender Project Gold videos talking about their amazing digital painting tool. The foundational tech you use or allow in a production has an expressive range where it works best, so, if your expressive range is a procgen digital painting tool like the one Project Gold used, then you can makes something that looks like Project Gold more easily than if you did not have that tool.

@halcy that is roughly the idea (really it's a hierarchy of people working together, like any other kind of big team). that is possible at this scale because the tech flattens everything out to make it more "art directable" (to borrow a euphemism from the Blender folks), and that means there's less internal training that has to be done to get everyone approximately on the same page, among other production benefits.

@aeva I mean, I Guess, and I know very little about how games are made at scale, but I'd have guessed that there would be someone, or a small amount of people, who are responsible for the vision / vibe / Art Direction, for everyone else to work within, and that that's not a full circle overlap with whoever delivered the engine

@aeva @halcy that's one way to see it, but this sounds like an invitation to be different just out of spite, and that's not motivation enough.
what i prefer to think about are principles and deconstruction: why do we render it the way we do? the first thing that always matters to me is readability: does the player get a good sense of the 3d world they are in?
unable to do much more but scale what it has got, AAA even often violates that, to the detriment of fun.
