@MisterMaker yeah buying/owning/driving a campervan is ridiculously expensive in NL (just like everything else yay).
I was looking into buying abroad, but I think you can't bring it into the Netherlands then, which sounds challenging.
Edit: I'm so sick of this country 😂
@Gina @MisterMaker have you considered a cheap boat? Anchorages in the med are free. Boat life (to me at least) seems more fun and more freedom than van life.

What I could also do, instead of buying a van, is take short city trips by plane during long weekends all over Europe and try different places.
But that would limit me to big cities. While I think I might prefer smaller cities or even the countryside. But still with an expat vibe. And good coffee places. And quiet. But also lively. Sigh. 🤦🏼♀️

@MisterMaker @AccordingtoWouter ha ik heb begin dit jaar nog een boete gekregen omdat ik de btw aangifte een DAG te laat had ingeleverd. Het argument dat hun portaal er de dag ervoor uit lag en ik de aangifte niet KON doen deed er niet toe 🙃

@Gina @MisterMaker ja ook dat gebeurt in Spanje. En erger nog. Dingen als brieven die niet naar je adres zijn verstuurd en mensen dus niet wisten dat er problemen waren en dan geconfronteerd worden met belachelijk hoge boetes. Onduidelijkheden over waar je belasting moet betalen. Gewoon echt horror.

@Gina : 🤔 how do campervans and cats work together? Are they roam around freely while you drive? Do you need to get them into transport boxes? Do they have to sit on the co-drivers seat?
You probably don't want them to walk into your field of view or be thrown around if you have to break.

@Gina Try aiming for some suburbs, maybe? Some can feel quite rural and still close enough to large cities

@Gina What you can do too. You live a minimalist lifestyle, work less and travel more. You choose a different place each time and stay there for a longer period. But you keep your base in the Netherlands.

@sheogorath no idea, but entire populations seem to be traveling with their pets, so we'll find out. Fortunately my cats sleep 23 hours a day.

The other day I checked the democracy index 2025, and it cross-ref'ed to another list measuring countries on a host of safety, freedom, human rights criteria. Perhaps there are more such lists with things you do not readily think of, e.g. on laws, regulations, pension, etc.

@smallcircles New Zealand would be an interesting option, esp the north island. Unfortunately it has the same housing problem as Australia. I'm not moving to the other side of the world just to be poor there.

@mcc @rotopenguin @Foritus I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Mac OS sparse bundle shrink.
A ZFS bitstream file works roughly that way, though it’s not carved up into smaller, FAT32-friendly chunks. You get one using ‘zfs send’, and you should be able to mount it directly. I don’t personally use btrfs, but I would expect it to have similar capabilities.
Shrinking such a file when data is removed would involve another ‘zfs send’ operation to a new file on the disk, so you would need at least the size of the file in free space.

@mcc I've had some issues with NTFS, mostly if my computer crashes, I need to boot into Windows and do chkdsk /f on them to repair them. Other than that it works mostly fine.
Steam on Linux does not seem to like NTFS (I've had a couple of games work on NTFS but loads more not) but if it's just for archival I guess that won't be an issue?
