If you build a task manager without the facility to do recurring tasks that tells me a) you're not the one doing the recurring maintenance tasks and b) you either don't recognise the importance of maintenance tasks or you haven't even noticed that they're being done around you to allow you to do the big one off production of a European open source task manager, say.
Come on, it's 2026. Do better men. And it is mostly men.
@afewbugs i think to a certain extent it's just *easier* to make a task manager that only handles one-off tasks. a lot easier.
which is to say, there may (only may) be no misogeny here, just a complete lack of ability to actually *define* the problem before they try to solve it…

@afewbugs Yes, but not directly.
Nextcloud itself doesn't support recurring tasks (or didn't when I last used, a couple of years ago, but it seems the issue still remains), and this issue is something that has surfaced a few times over the years.
There is, however, a workaround, which I've used since I encountered this particular issue.
You'll need to use your phone to set up recurring tasks and mark them complete.
And you'll need to use DavX5 and Tasks to do it (not sure that there's an equivalent for Apple devices, those are the two programs I use on Android).
When you use those two combined, Tasks will correctly recreate the recurring task on Nextcloud.

Hah, your e-ink setup is much fancier than mine (I just have a ~4am cron-job that sends my daily agenda to my phone-specific email account so that I have it on my phone). But nice work!
@gumnos Yeah, part of this is getting away from the phone, as well as just getting away from Apple in general.

@afewbugs would love to see more support for recurring tasks! Blaming men for the lacking feature seems kinda weird though. I see a lot of seemingly male users willing to pay for this feature: https://help.nextcloud.com/t/repeating-tasks/225106/21. Have you tried implementing that yourself instead of demanding it from men? I guess many people also just have other ways to keep track of these things, such as recurring calendar events with notifications, alarms, reminder apps, or they're good at remembering them.

@afewbugs I had looked into this a while ago and from a technical perspective the WebCAL and iCalendar standards which are used by Nextcloud and many others support recurring tasks. However, support for it seems to depend on both the server and the client and many lack support for it. I'm not really sure why; I assume it's just difficult to implement and/or not enough people asked about it. But if you use the right client it should work with Nextcloud.

For chores, I quite like "x days after completed." I used to use a great app called "our home" for this, but it just stopped working one day. It seemed to have no business model. -

That's why I need a task manager to tell me to keep on top of things like that. If you're willing to put in your share of the work to maintain a healthy, functional environment both at home and at work you can learn too

@afewbugs the web interface doesn't have the ability, but some clients do. i use @jtx, but due to the lack of support in the web interface i don't use recurring tasks at all (and i would really love to). while for some it might be ok to just use a compatible client, for me it's not enough if it doesn't work in the web interface

If any @nextcloud developers happen to be reading this and want a feminist perspective, actually especially if they're reading and don't want a feminist perspective: there are two types of tasks, one off achievement tasks like build a website, write an article, paint a room where once it's done it's done, and recurring maintenance tasks: do the laundry, change the sheets, water the plants.

@afewbugs I can set recurring tasks on my Nextcloud calendar task list via 3rd party apps like Reminders on iOS or Evolution via CalDAV
I'm not sure if there's a way to do it through the web interface, if that's what you're asking though!

Gawd, the shit I got when I waded into a "discussion" on Instagram about how "men are so helpless and useless and they need to be given a LIST of chores before they will help" and I chimed in: "Actually I have ADHD and if my ex had given me a specific, detailed list instead of just telling me to 'look around and see what needs done' and then getting MAD that I didn't do what HE WANTED DONE maybe I wouldn't have this huge emotional trauma" and it turned into: "YOU'RE JUST ENABLING LAZY MEN AND GIVING THEM EXCUSES, ADHD ISN'T A GOOD EXCUSE, EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW TO CLEAN"… …um, no, not everyone does. And it's really fucking sexist to assume that WOMEN ESPECIALLY are "born with" this knowledge and skill set and little "habit tracker" already programmed in.

So we've strayed a very long way from Nextcloud's task manager, but the older I get the more I see "Who does the dishes after the revolution?" as one of the first questions that should be asked in any progressive space. I've seen at permaculture camps where the men wander off to form a drumming circle while the women set up the cooking rotas and compost station. I've seen it at the meetings where the men stand up and give inspiring speeches while the women organise drinks and take the minutes
Hell I even see it in queer spaces where the women, femmes and enbies are the ones organising booking the venue and bringing home made cake after checking everyone's dietary requirements in advance. The first step towards dividing the tasks that bring the glory and the tasks that just have to be done up fairly is just noticing how they're divided now

Quite prosaically, I’m using Reminders in Nextcloud Calendar for recurring tasks. Works very well for me.

I love the piece Cory Doctorow wrote about RSS.
But I take exception to the idea that it's been dormant, or that Google made it work. The NYT did that. And there were lots of good if not great feed readers before Google.
