I just re-read the trilogy His Dark Materials.

  • I just re-read the trilogy His Dark Materials. The first and last time I read it, I was very religious. I loved the first book with its criticism of churches doing evil in the name of god, but was disappointed with the other two when I realized they were anti-god, not just anti-evil-church.
This time I read it as an atheist. I particularly enjoyed Mary's description of how she went from nun to atheist. It has put me in the mood to hear other people's stories of leaving religion.

@dillyd Happened when I was a teenager and witnessed/experienced the hypocrisy between what was preached and what was practiced by supposed church leaders. All that, plus the β€œgay people are going to hell” stuff.

When I was a kid, a whole housing estate's worth of us were sent down to the local Methodist chapel on a Sunday morning for indoctrination, which kind-of stuck.

It was only years later that I realised my parents had done this so they could stay in bed and have sex.

    Instant atheism.

@dillyd Mine was a slow burn. A long build up of questions dismissed with only responses of 'just have faith'. One they didn't like me asking was why the letters of Paul were in included in the Bible when they didn't follow the supposed strict criteria for acceptance into it. Lots of lies, vindictiveness, etc. Complete dismissal and disapproval of anyone with a disability of any kind.

I ended up going overseas as a missionary and what that did for me was to make me see that their are loads of different ways people 'be Christian' with many directly contradicting each other. Also that the things reported as evidence of being in the right 'vision from god', 'being shown signs' etc, literally happen in every religion.

Then there's all the truly awful and horrific things in the world that you would think a benevolent god would help out with if they gave a shit. But instead those who have good, comfortable lives through luck consider themselves blessed, further demonstrating that they consider those not in their circumstances as not blessed.

My personal moment of breaking came when my little sister asked me 'what do you want to do?' As in with my life and career, etc. I had literally never been asked that before. Religious and family trauma had led me to believe I was not allowed to do anything that I wanted to do. That I didn't have the right to direct my own life. So that was my 'fuck this shit' moment. 1/2

@dillyd I was a preacher’s kid who witnessed lot of ugly stuff: church politics, sexism, abuse being seriously downplayed, petty fights over things stuff like the name of a church or what style of worship music to play that lead to church splits, etc.

I read the bible and never got good answers for my logical questions about it.

As if those issues weren’t enough, I was also bi in a denomination that will only ever accept heterosexuals until or unless hell freezes over.

@dillyd They had me so terrified of making a mistake. "You have only one chance to get it right", You're going to hell no matter what", "The 144,000 were already chosen and everyone else is going to hell but keep trying!", et cetera. I kept hedging just in case they were all right.

But I did pray, and I asked for the truth. I did this for years.

Eventually, I did get the truth. And, guess what: It was not what they were saying it is. Getting there was not, erm, a pleasant experience. Nevertheless, I am glad it happened. But why did it have to take so long…

Back in Ancient Days, there were these things called Blogs. They would gather together in Blog Festivals to meet and exchange ideas and stories.

One such was Blog Against Theocracy.

    I participated.

Yo WTF?? Don't attack mods! That's not how you make Fedi better.I've heard folx are targeting my friend @markwyner. Don't fucking do that. He's a nice guy, and he's doing thankless work modding for a large server. If you chase the mods off those servers, then they're going to be wide open to the same fucking Nazis that you're harassing him about. That's like shooting Fedi in the damned foot.I *really* hope none of my followers are responsible for this. If y'all follow me, then you should know better. For real. I'm embarrassed.Note: if you want to do something good today, shower Mark with some love for being so quick to ban this Naziβ€”twice. He even closed mas.to's registrations after I asked. That's an example of a good mod, and I'm glad he's here πŸ’ž
