Love getting flagged by an AI service for using AI to plagiarise coursework.

@cR0w Are you serious? Who told you that? @SecurityWriter
@PogoWasRight @SecurityWriter My Masters program. It wasn't a good program but if they were pushing that, then I can see why others would think the same thing.

@cR0w @PogoWasRight @SecurityWriter my spouse who is working on a PhD right now has been instructed to self-cite when referencing from their MLitt dissertation.

They quote a reference on a AI slop outlet site which scraped the content from another source.

Currently arguing with their submissions team.
Isn't this just a clear net win for humanity @SecurityWriter? /s

@SecurityWriter
US court says that AI isn't copyrightable.
Do they interprete this as "you loose copyright, when AI scrapes your stuff"?@SecurityWriter @mikalai the output is not copyrightable as a new work (because it’s just a machine transformation of existing works), but it can still be under copyright of the "training data" if close enough

@SecurityWriter Wait, *arguing*? Like you told them what was up and they're actually pushing back?
That's crazy, and it has to be incredibly frustrating, I'm sorry you're going through that shit.

Self-citing is absolutely standard in mathematics.

@SecurityWriter I was accused of plagiarism and told that over 40% of my PhD. thesis was plagiarised from other sources. I was called to a disciplinary hearing and pointed out that I was the author of the papers and the book chapter that I had supposedly plagiarised, I had consented to me using my work, and provided appropriate attribution on the front of the thesis. Nobody actually thought to look at the name of the author I'd supposedly plagiarised.

@geospaz @mikalai @SecurityWriter That is where Epstein went. Space is young; that is what they told him.

@LewisWorkshop @SecurityWriter One reason that I ban TurnItIn from my own site, to avoid at least some of that particular idiocy...

Do they interprete this as "you loose copyright, when AI scrapes your stuff"?@mikalai @SecurityWriter that which was created solely by AI doesn't give copyright to the AI operator (this includes both full AI creations and edits), but it certainly doesn't exhaust the original copyright if it fails to be transformative / fair use when you edit something else (see: all the Disney artwork)

@SecurityWriter this cyberpunk future sucks, at least in the books they had flying cars and O'Neil cylinders

Ask their submission team to talk like a pirate in their next response to you. See what happens.

Me, checking out AI's understanding of a niche topic that I'm familiar with:"Hey, this is pretty good! It sounds like something I might have written!"
...
"Oh."

Another related issue, but not AI as such, but I’m being marked down on elements of my work that too closely align to Government policy and legislation.
Of which I’m an unnamed direct contributor and reviewer.
Life as a mature student. 😭
@SecurityWriter I had the first situation last semester where some of my work was part of a course's reading material. It was pretty mind-bending.

@LewisWorkshop @SecurityWriter
Conversely, when I was made to use TurnItIn for a course I taught, I tried feeding it the course notes file as a test. It claimed it was 70% plagiarised. The thing it was plagiarised from? The online copy of the course notes, which was bit-for-bit identical to the one I gave it, yet showed up as only 70% similar.

@SecurityWriter Is there anyway you can get someone to attest you contribution to that legislation ?
(And what is the official university policy on self-plagiarism, at CMU, at least, we had very explicit guidelines + a talk to instructors in case of concern about what the line is)
