  • @Solumbran @JigglySackles there was a particularly heavy handed show off when visa and Mastercard were going after adult games on other platforms in a «but them before we're forced to delist them», but other than that I don't remember them being pushed particularly strongly

  • They make a big deal out of saying that they hand-pick games and make sure they're good and proper, then they take responsibility of quality problems of the games that are available.

And last I checked you cannot filter. If you do a search, sure, but not on the main page, and during times like around Valentine's day, the website starts looking like a weird porn website. Also, they claim that they select good games, and no one is going to make me believe that those porn games are good quality games.

  • How much of that (the game related stuff rather than the GOG specific things) is due to publisher/developer restrictions I wonder.

Didn't know about most of that though. Very disappointing hearing about non-drm-free games too. That's the main and definitely most important reason I've been buying things on GOG. DRM free with an offline installer.

The only one not bothering me is the porn games. As long as I can filter things with a default filter if it gets annoying, I'm not bothered buy any type of game being sold there.

  • What do you consider slow? I just installed Cyberpunk today and maxed out my internet connection at 50 MB/s

Assuming you kept all your games installed, yes you could probably transfer them over to another system. But do you really keep all your games installed at all times? I know many people have more games in their library than their storage can handle.

  • Well, I don't really see a point in having to download and install another program just to download and install the program I actually want to install... also, I hate launchers.

  • Some games require more than just the files on disk, at least with older games, they set some properties in the registry or some such. How gog or heroic get around it I don't know, but ah actual installer is guaranteed to give the same result every time.

For most people with stable internet and using the launcher this isn't really an issue, but I imagine someone rural, on the ISS, part of the Atlantis expedition, or what have you, would enjoy to have a surefire way of getting their heroes 3 up and running

Not a use case for everyone, but for some it's invaluable.

  • Through Heroic I think you can just import an already installed game you have on an external hard drive. Wouldn’t this allow you to use your game on every new computer you get?

The downloads are really slow through Heroic, so I’d prefer not having to download offline installers on top of it😅

  • Backup. If you lose your Internet connection or GOG goes tits up, you don't lose access to your installers. Or maybe you buy a new computer or have a hardware failure etc. The principle is that you bought the game and there should be no artificial restrictions as to how many times you choose to install it on your computers, which is greatly aided by having the actual installers.

@francescotoniolo vale la pena, ogni tanto regalano anche titoli di un certo rilievo e abbastanza recenti. Quelli che ho già o che so non giocherei per motivi di tempo poi li giro qui e ad amici

what GOG is doing is great and i commend their efforts (even tho i wish they’d relax their submission policies juuust a bit), and as a store, not having piles of shovelware is great! but as a preservation platform, GOG’s approach is inherently limited. they can’t have every game, and they can’t keep supporting every game. that’s the fundamental problem with them as far as preservation is concerned. the only way i can think of where we could have total game preservation is if every game ever made had it’s source code readily available, and all people were taught the programming skills necessary to make the games work on whatever future computers we have. that way, even the most obscure games which don’t have a passionate fanbase can be ported, fixed and played for years to come. which, obviously, is not something that’s doable, by GOG or by anyone else
