’Denmark Switches.’ A national campaign to collectively move off Big Tech. March 20th is Big Switch Day. I’ve named my goal now. I’m already almost deMicrosofted, except for my photo archive. I moved to Libre & Tuta mail and have been purging photos as I await the release of Tuta drive. Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.

”42% of Danes want to try alternatives to Big Tech. 68% would like to reduce their screen time. But far fewer act on it.
Habits hold us back. Network effects bind us to the same platforms as everyone else. This only changes if we shift collectively. When we shift together, new habits become easier to maintain.
When enough of us shift simultaneously, alternative platforms gain the critical mass they need. When we act collectively, change is possible.”

@CiaraNi Nice ! Halfway that road, not fully yet.
Android is the weak point, need to figure that out.
Special for Maps for the few times we still need a car.
Laptop and PC are older ones. Running very smooth with Linux, no Big Bros there anymore. -

Before I could pick my 2026 goal for #DanmarkSkifter, I did a digital status. I was mildly surprised when I saw my 2025 digital changes together. I looked at the list and thought: ’Tell me you hang out in the Fediverse without telling me you hang out in the Fediverse.’
From Outlook to Tuta
From Office to Libre
From MS Authenticator to Ente Authenticator
From Google Play to F-Droid
From Spotify to AntennaPod
From Firefox to Vivaldi
From DuckDuckGo to NoAIDuckDuckGo
And I bought a back-up drive. -

@Flatus Tak. Jeg har også prøvet Ente. Den har mange super features. Jeg kørte dog ind i to (for mig) udfordringer.

And I bought a back-up drive.Talking from experience I'd add one thing (if it's a manual action):
Regular calendar reminder to actually do the backup.
edit: not that the reminder actually makes one do the action.. but it's a start.

Laptop and PC are older ones. Running very smooth with Linux, no Big Bros there anymore.@hanktank61 Every move helps. We were entangled in and by these solutions for years and decades, no wonder it takes time to move. I was so overwhelmed by the need to move Everything All At Once that I did nothing. Then I got so cross at the constant enshittification that I decided to just move different things at my own pace in a way that I could manage. 'Something better than nothing.' Bit by bit, we get there.

I sync my Photos automatic to my PC, when I come home and my smartphone switch to my Wifi. Then Syncthing do the rest for me.

@sebastian @Flatus Thanks for the tip. I did browse around in NextCloud's solutions but couldn't see a simple off-the-shelf one for a non-tech person like me who just wants it to plug-and-play work. I've been waiting to see Tuta's drive. Then the DanmarkSkifter campaign nudged to me to stop faffing around - get off OneDrive now, get the photos backed up, then pick the right cloud solution after that. Otherwise I'll never take that final step.

@CiaraNi I am delighted to hear this good news from Denmark! Let us turn our backs on Big Tech!

@mirabilos Ha yes :-) I hope it's obvious what I meant - it was just my shorthand way of saying 'empty my account, delete my account, cancel my subscription'.

@Pepijn Thanks, that's a good tip. Yes, it's a manual back-up. Just like in the old days, back when the internet was enjoyable. I have now, literally this minute, put a reminder in my calendar. Tak.

@Crisper Tak for forslagene og navnene. Dem vil jeg undersøge.
