Alcohol really does a number on folks. I just found out another old friend, who had struggled with alcoholism since their early 20s, died.
I somehow expected more overdoses from hard drugs among my friend set, but alcohol is far in the lead. It's even beating cancer and car crashes.

For my friends / kids I grew up with that are close enough to follow… Suicide tied with car wrecks at #1. Did have new friends die of cancer. But old crew is firmly in the wrecking car or suicide bucket. -

But old crew is firmly in the wrecking car or suicide bucket.@bryan a couple of the alcohol-related deaths were most directly attributable to suicide, but it was addiction that put them in that spot. I think only one was directly from liver failure.* One of the auto deaths was also alcohol-related.
*-But, surprisingly young. So, when I say "only one of my friends died of liver failure at 50" the word "only" is working really hard. The expected number is 0.
