@sparfindig Do official instances like social.schleswih-holstein.de allow anyone to create an account or is it just for officials and government accounts?
@hpod16 This instance „provides a communication environment for state authorities, state politicians, local authorities, public organisations and recognised non-profit organisations.“ (See https://social.schleswig-holstein.de/directory?order=new for examples.)

@dalcacer funded by who though?
Seriously asking.
Do you think that public institutions should get involved in funding social media platforms as a service? Would you want your tax-euros to go to that? -

„EU backs €500 million launch of W to rival X; beta slated by February“@karlos oh, the EU doesn't have anything to do with this platform.
I've just heard about it myself. -

Talking digital sovereignty without any follow up actions gets shallow.
More problematic would be the acceptance of an instance provided by the EU. There would be a lot of trust issues, so that offloading that to a third party would yield better results.
Maybe it is time to search for letters in the alphabet that aren’t taken (x , w , …)

@BrennpunktUA @hpod16 Yes, #Mastodon WANTS to be like Twitter with the limited character count. But writing treads of multiple toots in the #Fediverse is just nonsense.
The 500 limit is a parameter in the Mastodon server software only. I wish it would be an account setting. Or in the editor field: A small hook could extend the limit to the Fediverse limit (5000 ? none)
We could fork Mastodon 💭 -

@hpod16 @BrennpunktUA Why should I split a long text in parts if I can sent it in one post?
As a Twitter user you may dislike a long text in your timeline. But that's a job for you App to show only some lines and an extend-symbol. -

(another would be Monnett social)@hpod16 yes I have heard of it, but not joining because we have, for starters, several European instances of Mastodon, which is European in origin. Also, I am not showing my ID card or whatever gives my identity to use it. Not very fortunate that take.

@Argyle13 I think I’d also be turned off by having to show my ID card…

@hpod16 many people said the same. It is not going to be a success I am afraid

(another would be Monnett social)@hpod16 lol, I just tried this URL: https://stage.wsocial.eu
It simply IS Bluesky. There's only Bluesky posts there, but pretending to be an European alternative 🤡 Unfortunately, WSocial has got full media coverage today. But
that actually works, does not! -

(another would be Monnett social)W feels like reinventing the wheel / cashgrab.
I'd like to see an "official" EU mastodon instance. That would provide a starting point for people as that seems to be the hardest part.
(On identifying myself by uploading stuff about myself to a service; a hard no. On walking to a police station to be identified and getting a box ticked as "identified", that would work.)

@ekari I see!
Thanks for sharing your views.
I have to say I’m also not sure I’d want to give some random website my 🆔.
As for and official EU mastodon instance, you mean one for people(anyone) to join? Or for official institution pages and EU politicians? Cause the latter exists
