me: so if I actually read the study its going to say that? or are you misrepresenting what it actually says for clicks or to validate a cultural narrative?
every media outlet ever: ...
me: and even if it does say the thing, when I read it is it going to turn out it had a sample size of 15 undergrads and dubious methodology?
every media outlet ever: hey look over there! (runs)

@Taweret this categorization is being *very* generous to the popsci hacks who shove this kind of shit out the door. I reckon most of them don't even understand their crimes, they're just passing along some shitty uni press release or whatever.

@Taweret That sounds about right. If it's not straight up misinformation half the time it's just for the clicks because news isn't about informing anymore, it's about making money. Which sucks.

@Taweret was listening back through the archives of Shocktober (annual miniseries by the Guys podcast hosts about the history of godawful morning radio) and they did a bit of a dive into how much radio guys love A Study. Just say "a recent study shows" and then whatever mildly amusing thing that was either asserted by dubious authors looking for exactly this sort of coverage, or just make something up, no one will ever check because they will forget everything you said by the time they get to work

@funkula they especially eat up 'studies' that reinforce cultural narratives like 'women be different from men' or the ever popular 'the younger generation is getting dumber because of (whatever the newest technology is)'

Also, every media outlet: No, we're not going to link to the study write-up or give enough details to easily find it yourself, because you might catch us at our bullshit. -

@Taweret this study has astounding new insight into the behavior of 10-20 hungry first year psych students who are fully aware of the research interests of their professor!

@Taweret
This is why I like you so much. Come over sometime and yell with me at Forensic Files about junk science.Plus: Who funded the study? Did they control for race, income, background? Was all of this data self reported? What did the control group look like? Were there any proper controls?
