Let the madness begin!

PSA: The trains in the Emilia-Romagna region are run by something called Trenitalia TPER. Despite having Trenitalia in the name, their trains are not included in DB Navigator or the Interrail app. This includes the highly convenient two-hourly direct Regionale Veloce between Milano Centrale and Bologna Centrale!
Now I have officially arrived in Italy.

Good morning! Today weโre finally starting the main program of this adventure: crossing the Apennine by going down from Parma to the Tyrrhennian Sea.

The timetable isnโt exactly tourist friendly. This morning gap seems to be an Italian speciality that is going to annoy me for the rest of the trip.

#Kurventrรถt โ Weโve almost reached the summit at Borgo Val di Taro. Then a long tunnel and it is downhill from there.

Aulla Luigiana, a small interchange station out nowhere. Thereโs a branch line from here to Lucca, but it currently features an hour of bus replacement and I donโt wanna. Along the coast it is.

The train from Piazza al Serchio arrives in Aulla at 10:23. The train to La Spezzia leaves 10:10 and the one to Pisa 10:21. Just in case you are wondering why it is running empty.

If you thought the Apennine is just glorified hills and stuff, youโd be sorely mistaken.

I guess we are in Tuscany now. Everyone on this Viareggio โ Lucca train speaks English.

My 7' transfer worked, so hereโs some travel advice. Two cities are worth visiting in Tuscany: Lucca and Siena.
Lucca has an intact medieval city wall which is now a fantastic park surrounding the intact old town. This makes the city feel spacious and relaxed, unlike Florence which keeps freaking me out with its noise and stone and lack of air.
Siena is built on a mountain ridge and so nothing anywhere is level. There are mad streets, tilted piazzas, and fabulous vistas from the city walls.

But do a quick stop in Pisa. The tower is not being done justice by pictures, you have to absolutely see it for yourself.

Now that you are in one it, the deal is to tell everyone with a mass-tourism tilt that Lucca isnโt worth seeing and the time for the detour is better spent in the queue for the Uffizi or something.

Waiting in Pistoia for a train to do it all again โ crossing the mountains, that is. This time on the OG line from Bologna to Florence which has loops and things.

Kinda lucky it works out with barely any wait. The timetable on the Tuscan side has room for improvement.

At least up here in the north, the west side of Apennine is steep requiring all the engineering while the east side rises more gradually. So, the first hour up from Pistoia to Porretta Terma is quite spectacular while the second part is a fairly normal mountain railway.

Bologna has not just a binario 1 tronco, it has loads on both sides, so there are Piazzale Ouest and Piazzale Est. If your train starts from the latter, you get a free workout. It is far, far away, past the big bridge in the picture and then some more.

The train to Prato leaves from binario 2 est โ because Iโm doing the mountains again, now on the Direttissima, the second of the three lines connecting Bologna and Florence. I promised you madness, didnโt I?

Because I am not paying for any reservations until weโve reached the end of Puglia โ did I mention that rule yet? โ Iโm not going to do the third line which is only used by high-speed trains. Also, it is mostly tunnels and a bit boring.

Yes, all of that is the station name. Why are you asking?

Firenze Santa Maria Novella. Come here for your fix of station architecture and skip the monstrosity that is Milano Centrale.
