It’s hard having subtle positions. Like people keep describing me as “anti-AI” but I’m very much not. I’m very opposed to much of the current AI hype cycle and the current crop of AI products being pushed everywhere.
But I DO want AI. I want AI that makes people’s lives easier, like the predictive devices that help people with disabilities live fuller lives. I want AI that solves problems that are intractable for humans, like finding cancer earlier and more reliably. 1/2

But “ChatGPT” and its ilk do not do that. For every small benefit they provide, they cause a disproportionate harm. And yes, some of that is on the choices adopters make (like laying off workers “because AI will do it”), but a lot of it is inherent to the design of the product itself.
