(me, an hour ago) ah! I found all of my old sketch books! a visual testament to my growth as an artist and as a human being since roughly 2002. *opens the first book* we shall never speak of this again *closes the first book*

you'd think this is a treasure and i refuse to see it otherwise, but what i've got here is a bookshelf that documents ~25 years of self loathing, pain, fear, substance abuse, mental illness, and (worst of all) proof that i've only ever been at best a perfectly average artist

@demofox i was going for more of a demon vibe, but at this point yeah basically

i think i don't have the mental fortitude to try and find my old concept sketches for the game idea i had about slowly dying of hypothermia while alone in the woods far away from everyone you ever loved

@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place oh hey, that reminds me of a short story I worked on for a bit

that project was waaaaaay over scoped anyway, there's no way I'm putting together multiple animations for every phase of hypothermia. the environment art would have been cool though

@aeva that's an interesting idea though

@aeva that sounds intense and weirdly specific

@aeva haven't seen many average artists come up with entirely new visual styles, like using surfels to represent geometry ;)
Maybe you're not the best at drawing, but you can definitely do a ton of other awesome things

@jon_valdes the technical aspects of art are usually where i put most of my effort, but technique/technology doesn't do anything on it's own. if an image doesn't communicate something or make you feel anything or otherwise come alive, what good is all the technical effort you put into it? or at least that's the goalpost they always moved on me in art school 😎

@jon_valdes i don't think average is a bad quality to have in this situation though because there are a lot of really amazing artists out there

@aeva I do see creative use of technology as an art form in itself. I often feel more awe and beauty in a creative technical solution than in many traditional art forms.
As a simple example, I feel overwhelmed with awe when looking closely at the mechanisms inside a mechanical watch.

@jon_valdes I think that's a valid outlook to have, it's just not what my goals are
