Ha! We thought we had a clogged pipe and had the pipes cleaned. Nothing found. Probably the septic tank is not draining as fast as it should. So, the cleaning cost us, but at least we know what the problem is not. Tomorrow we get more info from an investigation of the tank. We had it drained within two years, but something is not good. Thought of you. đ

Our tank is good, but we need a new drain field. It's 50 years old and water gushed from the field back to the tank when the guy drained the tank to have a look. So effluent can go out of the tank, but very slowly because the drainage in the field is bad. We are okay with it, though it'll be a mess, I think. It looks like the diagnosis is done which I'm happy about.

Still waiting on the drain field for our septic problem. Recently the inspectors for that were moved in with health inspectors. So the wait for the permit went from 1 week to 6 weeks. Next week is the 6th week, so maybe some action soon. Meanwhile we are needing to keep the amount of water we discard to a minimum so that we don't fill the tank up before the work is done. It won't be terrible if we fill it. We'll just need to pay to have it pumped out again. So far we have done fine with the small inconvenience.

It looks like the permit is lost. The permitting place checked the database and our address does not show up. I was asked for the permit number, called the company that is to do the work. They applied for the permit. They did not have the number. Sweet mysteries of life. Someone is looking into it.

Ha! We waited and had searches done for the permit. After 4 months of this we cancelled the work request, because the permit office could not find the permit. We got a refund of our deposit. We called another person to do the job. Two weeks later he has the permit and will do the job the middle of next week. Bingo! We probably should not have been so patient, but people should probably have told us the truth of the matter sooner than they did. Ultimately we have a better price for the job. And we have learned how to conserve water and may even be in the habit.

Solar Supercapacitor Lamp Probably Wonât Get You Saved At Sea
Most solar lights are cheap garbage that exist just to put more microplastics into the environment as they degrade in short order. [Jeremy Cook] built his own solar light, however, and this one might just last a little longer.
Most solar lights rely on the cheapest nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal hydride cells that are available on the market. They donât tend to have a lot of capacity and they wear out incredibly fast. [Jeremy] went a different route for his build, though, instead relying on a rather tasty supercapacitor to store energy. Unlike a rechargeable battery, that may only last a few thousand cycles, these supercaps are expected to perform over 500,000 charge/discharge cycles without failure. With such longevity, [Jeremy] suggests his build could last a full 1369.8 years, assuming it charged and discharged once a day. Whether the plastic transistor, LEDs, or diode could hold up over such a long period is another question entirely.
Electronically, the build is relatively simple. The solar panel collects light energy and turns it into electricity, charging the supercaps through a diode. The supercaps are only able to discharge through a transistor, which only turns on when the voltage output by the solar panel drops at night time, and the voltage on the base becomes lower than that on the emitter. When current flows through the transistor, it then lights the LED in turn and the device glows in the darkness. As a nice touch, the whole circuit is installed in a glass jug of syrup originally sourced from Costco. Files are on Github for those eager to explore further.
Given the light-in-a-bottle construction, [Jeremy] also playfully imagined that a lamp like this could theoretically be used as a safety device. If lost at sea, you could charge it using the sun and try and use it to signal for help. However, upon casually exploring the concept, he notes that a small solar-powered light will only raise the chance of a far-off ocean rescue from âextremely unlikelyâ to âstill very unlikely.â
