Texas banning lab-grown meat is another example of how conservatism isn’t just dumb, it’s *just not going to work*.

Texas banning lab-grown meat is another example of how conservatism isn’t just dumb, it’s *just not going to work*. The arguments for it are that lab-grown meat will take over on “ideological grounds” which is climate to them. Personally, as a meat eater, I find it reprehensible that I tolerate animals being raised for killing by the millions, and feel quite contrite, it is a shame I live with every day, and should probably stop.

@krismicinski if u eat meat for health reasons, what I do is I have a one-to-one donation to animal welfare groups whenever I eat meat that could be sourced unethically
for conferences, I usually state halal or kosher as my diet, but I think if u went vegan for a week it wouldnt be too much of a burden on ur health (not an expert on health, so idk for sure)

@nemo oh haha no i eat it not for health reasons, I’m sure i could replace it in my diet and, health-wise, would be fine as long as i put even a little bit of thought into it

@nemo many people are eating it for taste, cultural reasons (their family does it for example). That’s me; but I’m not lying to myself and saying it’s because it is a more efficient protein source or something

@krismicinski @nemo USAians get too much protein, anyway. My spouse and I have been vegan for about twenty years at this point. I hope you decide to join the club.

@fullyabstract @nemo i understand, it’s something i think about from time to time. At least I’d like to limit meat consumption in the abstract..

@fullyabstract @nemo one thing I agree on: Americans lie to themselves about how much (and what kind) of meat is generally good. I eat mostly chicken but that’s the one of the worst offenders in terms of animal treatment…

@krismicinski @nemo Yes, factory "farming" is an absolute horror show. These are sentient beings. There is a reason why documenting what goes in factory farms is often illegal. On the other hand, we're now being told by the Trump admin that treating people this way is also OK, and a significant minority of USAians is buying this.

@krismicinski @nemo It would be possible to produce a small amount of meat in a relatively humane way. So one compromise would be to go that route, where meat becomes not the main part of a meal.
