I heavily lean towards yes, although not every game may be
the creation of the game might be art, but the game itself might not have an artistic statement and may be, for instance, just for fun
whereas some games lean into having an artistic statement or purpose, and those I would definitely consider being art
-
@sterophonick@wetdry.world games with passion put into them are art. indie games are art. big aaa games (e.g. call of duty, sports games) are just corporate slop, but still technically meet the definition for art, although i dont consider those to be art

@alexia so would you say that Fortnite or Counter-Strike as complete products aren't really art as opposed to a game like Silent Hill f or Dust: An Elysian Tail?
No judgment for any answer btw, just gathering opinions.

one of the most common counterarguments I hear to the idea that videogames are art is their need to be played on specific hardware and how the culture constantly demands enhancements and remakes. what do you people think here

additionally video games are in the odd position where a few extra gigahertz or gigashits per megafart can improve an experience such as stabilizing a framerate or reducing stutters, or by allowing more detail to be rendered in real time

@sterophonick i like to point at The Beginner's Guide when people ask things like this, because it really blends the line between artistic statement and just a game
it changed the course of my life.

i feel like it's a very strange point to make -
@nelson i really oughtta play the beginner's guide

@sterophonick Can video games be art? Yes. But the video games that most people have actually heard of? Generally, no.
Can food be art? Yes. Is the premade sandwich you bought last week art? No. Even though people involved in the design of that sandwich used creative skills, and even though sandwiches are fascinating objects with masses of historical and political resonances that stretch across thousands of years of history. Something can be significant and worth talking about without being art.

@sterophonick An artist like Takashi Murakami might even do a large-scale production run of premade sandwiches, making that format into art. The art practice is how you transform context and meaning.
