I have another thing you can do to help people in Minneapolis!

Space Camp fundraising has been hard this year. Beyond the cancelled fundraiser in Jan, people are kind of tapped out with donation requests: there’s been so much dire need for groceries, rent assistance, stuff like that…well, when survival is in question, education and joy become luxuries for the privileged.
That’s what happens in times like these. But I’ll be damned if I let ICE rob these kids of Space Camp without a fight.

So much of the ICE invasion’s harm here in Minneapolis is going to be diffuse, long-term, things that faded away quietly, things that •didn’t• happen, injuries barely seen and never tallied.
Long after the media spotlight is gone, we’re going to be repairing, rebuilding, trying to catch back up, trying to heal, trying to fill the holes these months left. It’s like a whole second pandemic for us.

There’s definitely a hopeful feeling in having room to worry about Space Camp fundraising right now, instead of, say, ICE staging at the local Target parking lot yet again (with Target’s tacit blessing, damn them). It’s been quiet in the city these last few days. Fingers crossed.
Hopeful, but also melancholy: even if ICE does in fact draw down to pre-Dec levels, our “after” is not really going to come for a long time — and when it does, it will feel more like a scar than a sunrise.

This is the way of the current administration, things are broken quickly and LOUD, and then the repairs are quiet and hidden. But we will rebuild.
This is the problem with an administration centered on the "move fast and break things" crap of the rapacious Wall Street junk bonds, hedge funds, and Silicon Valley "disruptive capitalists". It's a terrible way to live and a terrible way to actually get anything done.
I wish we could celebrate (and reward) the rebuilding rather than the breaking.

great to see you keeping track of what's really important at the same time that you're fighting against the evil folks that don't get what life is really all about.
🙏 ❤️ 🙏 ❤️ 🙏 ❤️ to everyone there.

@inthehands this is a great fundraising model. Happy to donate and spread the word. Kids need opportunities to learn about science!

@inthehands happy to support Space Camp! That is awesome!
The kids would also be welcome at any of our low and high power rocket launches up in North Branch. They could bring Estes rockets, if they have them, or we could do a rocket build with them.

These kids are raising funds to go to Space Camp. It’s a beautiful structure: families pay what they can, then •all• the families fundraise the remaining total for •all• the kids together. Either everyone goes or no one goes.
The ICE invasion really knocked the fundraising on its heels this year: everyone diverted, one major fundraising event cancelled. It’s looking a little dire; maybe no one goes this year. They could use some help.

@inthehands I missed this when you posted it yesterday, thank you for bumping it again!
I used to work at Space Camp many years ago (and have a sister in MPLS) so this is all very near to my heart. 🚀

@inthehands Thank you for letting us know about this. I’m from Huntsville AL and Space Camp is amazing. Donating to this makes me feel really good, on so many levels.
Fingers crossed they get everything they need!

@inthehands Not a scar. More like all those too-hard exercises giving you a way stronger back. New, yes. But not new damage. New strength. Even if it doesn't feel like it yet. It will in hindsight.
