my contribution: I think it's cool that `man curl` includes an example for every single option
@b0rk the Linux man pages for sync(2) and setpriority(2) since they list perfectly sane deviations from the behavior that POSIX mandates.
Sync being synchronous instead of asynchronous and nice/setpriority acting on thread level and not on per process level.

@b0rk it's an uncool example these days but...
i always really appreciated how `man perl` links to 40+ other man pages that collectively describe the entire language and its standard library and tools. so if you are trying to learn about it everything you need is there and can be browsed or searched for. the prose is fairly engaging and well-written.
(these days online might make more sense but at the time having it available offline in a very lightweight format that was readable from the terminal was great.)
P.S. the manual pages are actually produced by perldoc which is also a very cool related tool.

@b0rk I find the BUGS section on Linux's man page cu(1) pretty amusing. It simply says "This program does not work very well".

@b0rk top(1) on linux. starts out with how to quit and how to get interactive help, ends with a "stupid tricks" section providing food for thought about what top actually does.

@b0rk I like the mdoc man page (at https://man.openbsd.org/mdoc ), partly because it's a nice example of a high-quality readable-and-searchable comprehensive reference for something that's by necessity large and somewhat complicated, and partly because it's one of not very many man pages out there that can be _its own_ example.

I use `man date` very often when I have to format dates - most programming languages use the same syntax so it's convenient when I don't remember if %m is "month" or "minute"
I like it because I know where to look and it works for a *lot* of programming languages (Go and php being rare exceptions)

it gives examples BEFORE giving an exhaustive list of options!
the synopsis just says "rsync [OPTION...] SRC... [DEST]" instead of giving you an exhaustive list of options like "-ABCFGHILOPRSTUWabcdefghiklmnopqrstuvwxy1%"!
there's an "OPTION SUMMARY" section that gives you a 1-line summary of each option! (this feels SO SO much useful than the normal SYNOPSIS to me)

i tried implementing this OUTPUT SUMMARY format for grep's man page, I can't tell if I like it or not but it's an interesting exercise to try to give a 1-line description of each item, categorize them, and then order them most-frequently-used-by-me first https://gist.github.com/jvns/9f5966633875a4758e0d947a5b4dbdcf
(probably some of the descriptions are wrong, I only thought about them for maybe 3 seconds each, also this is Mac grep)

The rsync manpage is among the greatest. One of its great feature is the list of every return code and their meaning, really helpful when scripting!I'm quite fond of the bash manpage

@b0rk openbsd man page for chmod is much easier to read than the one on linux in my opinion.

@b0rk I have a /least/ favorite, it’s sudoers(5). Dense paragraphs followed by an EBNF grammar of the config format 😭
What I would *expect* to find there is a practical discussion of how to set it up with some simple examples that will set me on my way. I appreciate that authentication is complex & sensitive, and this documentation is very detailed but … I always bounce off this manpage and end up on stackoverflow instead.

Oh, also, I have skin in the game. I'm not just randomly dismissing the ethical concerns, I'm right in the middle of them.
A book I wrote was among those pirated by Anthropic. I'm getting ~$1500 (and my publisher is getting the other ~$1500) from the settlement. And, since I have a bunch of code in Open Source projects spanning decades, I'm sure my code is also in the training data for all of them.
I'm not ecstatic about it. But, it's where we are and I don't imagine I can do much about it.

- I can't ignore the environmental cost or the cost to our democracy, but I don't see a way out of it. Me being out of work isn't going to stop it.
- Also, it's fun. Sorry, it is. It's not programming, anymore, it's managing...but, it's management with near instant gratification. I can do experiments I've wanted to try, but never had the time or energy for and toss the failures. I can launch a smallish project in a weekend that would have taken a month of weekends before.fin...probably.

- It sucks to have a significant portion of the folks I look up to in tech absolutely trashing folks who're using AI. I understand that sentiment, I was trash-talking AI and its users until a few months ago (and I am still repulsed by AI prose, imagery, and video...it's nauseating). But, most of those folks don't have to worry about money...they were millionaires in their 30s by being in the right place at the right time with the right skills. I wasn't in the right place.

- I'm pretty sure the option to say "no" is rapidly fleeing for everyone making a living in tech. It's too powerful a tool for a tech-related business to opt out of...they'll be killed by companies that spend the $100/month on Claude or whatever.
- And, I mean, it's not all bad. Part of my "OK, let me give this an honest try" experiments led to me knocking out a half dozen projects on my todo list. Some of it was finishing projects over a weekend that I'd been tinkering with for months.

- It's difficult for me to say I "like" it. It smooths out the creativity of what I've always thought of as at least partly an art. Even while I can see my productivity skyrocket when using it.
- It is even more difficult for me to say, "no, I won't use it". I spent the first 25 years of my tech career living on sub-poverty wages trying to make a living in Open Source software and my own businesses. I am aging without notable savings. I need health insurance and a good salary to catch up.

Speaking of AI. We're in a tight spot. "We", as in, tech workers, I mean.
A bunch of things are true and they all pull in different directions.
- It works. I'm not really willing to entertain the argument that it doesn't, anymore, after having built several large and small projects with it. For coding, it is a lever that can provide a dramatic productivity increase. I'm comfortable saying 3x+, overall. Maximalists are saying 10x or 100x. Even if it's only 3x, that's industry shaking.

This video is amazing...so amazing, I am skeptical. This is unbelievable dexterity for a robot. There have been huge leaps in the past couple decades, true, but this feels like it's too far, and out of nowhere.
But, there's another technology where China is kicking ass: Generative AI video, especially motion capture/application.
I assume there must be human witnesses, so it seems like word would get out at some point if it were fake, maybe I'm just overly skeptical.
