Welp. Bedroom TV is dying.

Welp. Bedroom TV is dying. Which is something I can't afford to replace, but I need it for my sleep hygiene and mental health so I guess we're replacing it anyway
I hate piece of shit "smart" TVs
@eniko in case a projector is an option, I find those are a *lot* cheaper than tvs/monitors. I got a cheap €80 one and the quality has blown me away (for the money, that is). Main drawback is that it has an audible fan, it doesn’t really bother me but it’s there and not super quiet. It’s still 80 bucks of course, but a lot cheaper than a comparably sized tv.
Anyway hope you can just find a free one 😊

@eniko what you need is the warm glow of a CRT TV 😁

Maybe since smart TVs need RAM and storage the shortage will bring back dumb TVs

@eniko a cheap-ish projector and laptop or HDMI stick with casting support has been a good solution for us. Sound quality is the only thing that’s a bit meh.

@eniko Wish I was near you— I have 3 working tvs that I trash picked but currently have no use for.

Might have fixed the TV? God knows how long that'll last though
By fixed I mean I swapped out the plug converter (Cyprus is in the EU so everything comes with EU plugs but all the outlets are UK style) and also swapped it to a different spot on the power strip
Can specific plugs on power strips fail?
-
@rotopenguin @eniko hdmi drm has not been an issue on this particular one nor have I heard it mention in the few reviews of multiple devices that I have watched, so I don’t know about “seldom”, but China being China I could see that happen.

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place oh most certainly they can

@eniko sadly, instead of that, they'll probably just push more of them to the cloud.

@eniko
Yes, individual outlets on power strips can fail. If that happens, you should replace the power strip. IMO -

@eniko are there burn spots on the plug tongs? The socket could be loosy-goosey with its contacts.

@eniko Yes. Also catch fire.

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place What about a monitor and a mini PC running linux

@eniko Yup. I have a brand new one where plugs seem to come loose easily (the other sockets seem better), and wall sockets can fail too.
It might be worth getting a suitable (French/German?) power strip and swapping the plug for a UK plug, instead of having adapters on each plug.

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place Yes.
While melting your outlets should be quite rare, sometimes the contacts in a given outlet will loosen over time and/or oxidize, so it's not all that uncommon for specific plugs / outlets to fail.
