like it's crumnchy. but is it too crumnchy? 🤔

@eniko it's great with the complex wall texture, legit.
but the way it's handling the sky gradient gets under my skin a bit tbh -

@eniko looks great for things like backgrounds. mouse would dither selectively, and go for posterized on certain important foreground elements, similarly to how many manga artists have different levels of abstraction for foreground and background art in the same panel to make the important faster to distinguish from its context by feel

@eniko for the árt s túl e on top IT works well, but on the bottom, too much detail in the original makes the dithered seem too... Noisy?

@eniko I prefer the crumchy

@0 yeah i can still do sprites without dither

@Leviamicky @eniko @youen could be fixed by other dithering algo, right?

btw here is the FF7 with ordered dither but no subpixel dither compared to the one with subpixel dither, and the details just vanish completely. not even a contest

huh. interesting. i think the ordered dither was actually interfering with the subpixel dither, because i like the one without the ordered dither (left) better than the earlier one with the ordered dither on top of the subpixel dither (right)

@eniko ... Your eyes are better than mine, I can only spot two places that look even a little different.

@Craigp it's pretty evident in the sky gradient, particularly

@eniko Yeah, both the things I noticed were in the sky.

RE: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/116037296256572064
@stereo4x4 @Leviamicky @youen i fixed it, it was adding ordered dither on top of the subpixel dither

ok yeah i'm suuuuper happy with this now, this worked out better than i hoped

@eniko
That subpixel dithering is gorgeous! I feel like it adds artistry over even the original full colour version. -

@eniko please don'T tell me you did this qith qbasic ... for my peace of mind how long did the rendering take?

@eniko Right looks very pretty. Sharp and lively, painterly.

@eniko I was wondering if this was going to look okay with BIG pixels (scaled up to a large display, etc), and the answer appears to be "it looks good!" based on viewing it on a 32" monitor.
A CRT filter of some sort to fuzz the pixels up a bit might be nice on very large / high resolution displays, but certainly does not seem necessary.

@zerodime lol no I did this in C# just to test my assumptions

@jonikorpi I trust your eye for what looks good, so thanks! :D
