For The Globe and Mail newspaper, I've spent the last four months hearing from survivors of Myanmar's infamous scam compounds. Run by Chinese criminal syndicates with the collaboration of at least one Burmese pro-junta militia, the camps are staffed by trafficking victims, including a growing number of Africans who are beaten, electrocuted and raped if they don't meet scamming targets. They aren't paid for their efforts.

The criminals operate in Myanmar, because it's too dangerous for them to do so in China. Last month, 11 Chinese operators of Burmese scam camps were executed in China.
Thailand tries to curb activities, including by shutting off internet to border villages where the scam camps are located.
How have the criminals reconnected to the web in response to this? Via good old Elon Musk. Starlink is among the biggest internet providers to Southeast Asian scamming compounds.
@ZekuZelalem Very satisfying to see those 11 slavers rotting in their graves, but this is NOT who China (or anyone else) usually executes. My guess is they enslaved too many Chinese citizens, forcing the government to make a token gesture.

Here are some samples of AI generated ads used by criminals in Myanmar to prey on desperate, unemployed job seekers across Asia and Africa. "Typing speed" is a giveaway, they want people who can learn preprepared scam scripts with ease. The always pretend the job is in Thailand or Cambodia, knowing that nobody would agree to travel to war-torn Myanmar. The ordeal begins when they are picked up at airports in these countries...then driven into Myanmar. Meta and Telegram are part of the problem.

@oblomov I asked. In Cambodia, apparently authorities at the airport are very likely to follow and stop arriving Nigerians, Pakistanis and Ethiopians, because too many people of these nationalities have been trafficking victims. The criminals likely want to avoid certain nationalities to reduce the risk they face of getting followed, spotted and then jailed by Cambodian police on trafficking charges.
@ZekuZelalem @oblomov its good that the Cambodian authorities are putting pressure on them, its too bad they dont have more effextive criteria than nationality to spot potential victims

I wonder how many camp like these around the world are going to be filled with the people that the conservative ICE troops are kidnapping in the USA right now. It seems that the USA is or will be a leading people trafficking source.

AI & BS vs FediNowadays, when most people say "AI" they tend to mean LLMs and Diffusion Models.
But. the type of AI referred to in that post is not an LLM or Diffusion Model. But the type of AI that has been around for decades, most people (in certain parts of the world) already use (whether they realize it or not)
Ex of that other type of AI: anti-SPAM filters, reading hand written address on mail, etc.

- where should I register is still a source of confusion
- you will still run into https://bsky.app/ links that you need to figure out can be accessed through your own app whatever that may be
- your provider going down will still cause you to lose your data unless you've been making backupsThe more complex architecture adds even more potential sources of confusion IMO

@reiver @liaizon I would guess that the person who told you that had been involved in an opt-in/opt-out dispute. That seems to be the development issue that exercises fediverse users the most. Which is not to excuse the behavior, but that /is/ one fundamental cultural difference between here and there: Opt-out is the default assumption there. (Which is borne out by the next post in your thread, where a dev says they prefer BS because it provides the user data needed for an AI-driven filter.)

@liaizon @undead And the server-based moderation doesn't help here. Users feel trapped, it makes things worse. But to be fair it's not specific to activity pub. Bluesky has its own echo chamber, and X as well. But at least the underlying philosophy behind atproto tries to create bridge between groups rather than segregating them in echo chambers.

@liaizon @undead The reason why I have such a strong opinion against activity pub is that I saw, among other horror stories, how one of the most prominent "cypherpunk" builders of the ETH community that tried to migrate from X have been banned by a large ActivityPub server for being a "capitalist". So probably what I dislike is NOT the ideologies per se (if anything I appreciate the ideal), but really, it's the mob mentality.
