Windows 12 is due to come out this year.
1) Your computer does not meet the system requirements. Again.
Why?
Your PC will need a dedicated NPU — a specialized processor designed to handle AI tasks. So, if you recently bought a new PC just to use Windows 11, Microsoft wants you to go shopping again.
2) It will finally, unfortunately, introduce a subscription model.
That's right — you read that correctly. They want you to pay and keep paying to use the computer you just bought. Technically, you won’t own your computer while Windows is installed.
NOW is the time to try Linux. Stop waiting. Don’t make excuses. Don’t even complain — we all knew this day was coming. Either try Linux, or admit you’re Microsoft’s little bitch.
Source? Yes, this is real.

@NetscapeNavigator #Windows12 - they #Microslop it anyway 😂
-
@lazyb0y @NetscapeNavigator Yep. For a long time I bought my #Debian install CDs as a way of contributing to the project.
Now I'm wondering if #SPI want to run a "voluntary subscription" programme for #FOSS users. Maybe tie it in with things like Debian's
popconto redistribute funds to commonly installed software.@diffrentcolours @lazyb0y @NetscapeNavigator
Reminder that PopCon is the only source of package installation data, but also universally rejected by anyone who cares about the security of their systems. As a result it vastly overrepresents single laptop users who have just installed Debian.

How long until Windows 11 itself is forced out of support? I can see most people unwilling to upgrade if it means having to rent their own computers, and Microsoft forcing their hand anyways by removing security updates from Windows 11 -

I recently fell back in love with Mabox.

@dashdsrdash @lazyb0y @NetscapeNavigator I think "universally rejected by anyone who cares about the security of their systems" is a bit of an overstatement. But I also don't think we need to try and optimise this right now on Mastodon.

@NetscapeNavigator I make some income from Adobe. What's your suggestion? I need to run Photoshop with GPU acceleration. Any options?
-
Saying "it will introduce a subscription model" gave me the wrong idea, there will likely be a subscription option to tie in office 365 with AI features
"
references to a subscription model were found in the latest Windows preview builds, suggesting that Microsoft is finally going to force users to pay a monthly subscription to use Windows, right? No. These references are almost definitely tied to the newly discovered "IoT Enterprise Subscription" edition of Windows 11, not the client version of Windows vNext.
"[1]"
The classic Home Windows is likely to remain a one-time licence. Advanced AI services would be added as an option.
"[2]@ambiguous_yelp Not sure if this will be the case, #MacroSlop is deeply in debt and needs a way to capture money, and for sure companies would need to pay, or do what Europe is already doing, moving away from #MicroSlop

@NetscapeNavigator Will these requirements exist? Will my computer need this? Or did someone report that they might, potentially?

I don't have a dog in this race (longtime Linux user, and I've given up being a tech journo) but this report felt off to me.
WindowsCentral did a bit of extra source chasing and reckons it's overblown to say the least
Ah, well, then ... Windows is sure great, then.

Wait. "... bringing back the movable taskbar" is on the 2026 roadmap for Win11??!! Right. Seems to be going great at Microslop. -

@NetscapeNavigator Let the normies eat shit and die with Microslop.
Every sane person would move to Linux and have it as their base OS. Wanna use Windows, just fire up a VM if the RAM allows or have a disposable flash drive with Windows 10/11 LTSC install on it.

@OSchell @NetscapeNavigator That article may have a point, but the site itself is so bad, so much ads and several popups, that I refuse to finish reading the article. But thanks for pointing it out.

@NetscapeNavigator The core OS will stay sub-free. And the optional features seem to be all AI.
Only the NPU part is really bothering me, everything else i don't care for.
If you really want to let people switch to Linux, concentrate on its strengths, not on the weaknesses of others. Open-source doesn't need populistic language and half-truths. -

@NetscapeNavigator At the same time as California is leading the charge to cripple consumer computing with ID requirements...
And the AI firms have bought up all the RAM, SSD and flash...
And bought all the HDD from Western Digital...
And Google is closing Android to developers who don't want to buy into their syndicate...This is the end-run to destroy FOSS and consumer computing. You will rent what they offer and comply with their terms or you won't have a computer.
