Google has news on what you will need to do for still being able to sideload apps:
* enable developer options
* confirm that you are not tricked
* restart phone and re-authenticate
* wait one day
* confirm with biometrics that you know what you are doing
* decide if you only want unrestricted installs for 1 week or forever
* confirm that you accept the risks
* enjoy the few apps that still have developers motivated to develop for a user-base willing to put up with this@grote I'm very thankful to google for covering the incredibly common case where I'm forced at gunpoint to install a malicious apk. Now such attacks will require attackers to kidnap me for a couple of days, which severely limits their options.
We can finally break the cycle of coercion where after being scammed into installing an apk, I started scamming people into installing apks.

*Cries in Redmi phones* (they're not allowing me to unlock the bootloader 💀)
@ziclaud depends on the device. My Redmi Note 11 took two attempts before I could finally unlock the bootloader, I had to wait 2 weeks because I clicked twice on the Mi Unlock tool.
You need a Xiaomi account, insert a SIM card into your phone, use that phone number for the Xiaomi account, then you can start the verification process. It's horrible, but it can be done.

@grote "In these scenarios, scammers exploit fear – using threats of financial ruin, legal trouble, or harm to a loved one – to create a sense of extreme urgency."
In these scenarios, Google exploits fear – using threats of financial ruin, legal trouble, or harm to a loved one – to justify taking control over your phone.
"According to a 2025 report from the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA), 57% of surveyed adults experienced a scam in the past year, resulting in a global consumer loss of $442 billion."
We don't have any data on harm being caused specifically by sideloading apps, so here is some completely unrelated data that is very worrying.

why do i have a feeling this is not really about security?

@nazokiyoubinbou @FifiSch @grote Unfortunately, you cannot do complete backups of android devices if you are not rooted. You may have a phone in use currently, which you didn't have the foresight to bootloader unlock and root when you initially got it, and thus installing any custom ROM is not very interesting as you would loose a large part of your data. The part of the data that you would lose is unknown as app/phone backups are opaque, and might also result in losing access to some messaging applications if not done carefully. In the best case, you would have a second phone from which to transfer data from, as a reference (and for messaging apps that can transfer accounts between devices).
At least, that's how I see it. The process itself is easy, but the steps before and after are much more scary.In all, I do agree with your initial premise that LineageOS and other custom ROMs will become more popular for those that have android headsets that have unlockable bootloaders and have the initial knowhow.
We do seriously need more alternatives to Android and iOS, such as postmarketOS, as the current state of things is getting very dire. Unfortunately, the hardware itself is not very standardised and manufacturers want to keep control to squeeze a few more cents from each device…@confusomu @FifiSch @grote Honestly just feels like a whole lot of "I don't want to, it sounds hard." Which is just what all these posts feel like.
If you don't divest from Google, it stores backups in your account — the "cloud" if you will. If you do want to divest from Google, you can set it up to use the internal backup function that's in like 9 or so on up to backup to a flash drive or whatever, which it can import during initial configuration when you first boot up.
But really there is a lot less to lose in most apps than one might think. It's usually so little trouble to redo things I typically don't bother even though I have root and backups. There are benefits even to starting clean.
People want to be scared of the process.
As always, one can ask someone to help!

I found a credit union in one quick search that allows at least some browser access ...
This is a fight, find allies. Credit unions are better than banks, many much better.

@grote remember, kids: "sideloading" is just "installing software that isn't on the app store." the corpos are just calling it "sideloading" because it sounds shadier.

@StellaFoxxie @monapp @grote I was able to do it 10 years ago by just reading and thinking. I was only 13 at the time. Maybe today it's hard now, idk. I haven't dabbled with custom ROMs these past few years...
But one thing I do know is that the custom ROM dev's not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, thermonuclear war, or me getting fired because the alarm app failed and that they'll laugh at me if I point my finger at them for messing up my device, lol.
