@oatrapado @grote Europeans might come to the rescue in the coming years with creations like FairPhone and Jolla Phone. Maybe if the donations start flooding in, Pine64 might be convinced to put more effort into the PinePhone.

But the real question then is: How much scam and loss is due to malicious side loaded apps?
Does it matter? This is *my* phone. I shouldn't be punished for other people's irresponsible behavior.

* confirm that you are not tricked
* restart phone and re-authenticate
* wait one day
* confirm with biometrics that you know what you are doing
* decide if you only want unrestricted installs for 1 week or forever
* confirm that you accept the risks
* enjoy the few apps that still have developers motivated to develop for a user-base willing to put up with this@grote also: developers that have to be verified by Google anyway!
(The original post is just client side, but Devs also face extra hurdles!)

funnily at the moment it isn't. There have been some leaks as in some instances they "forget" to wipe it after use.
Edit: But yea, they'd probably get it signed through governmental pressure in the end either way...

It should just be a toggle in developer options. Anyone who might "accidentally sideload their phone to death" isn't going to know where to look. -

@nazokiyoubinbou @grote However scary the whole new Google process is for the non-expert user, installing a new OS on your daily driver phone is a hundred times scarier.
@FifiSch @nazokiyoubinbou @grote graphene might have a chance with their partnership with motorola, run from start, and people won't even know about thim simply no google by default in it.

Per the screenshot, biometrics are not necessary. The device PIN will also suffice.

If we DO go through all this bullshit to sideload or get F-droid installed... so now our phone is in developer mode. Are there going to be any authorized Google store apps that detect developer mode and go "nuh-uh"? And if that's the case, and I disable developer mode (presumeably borking our F-droid/sideload apps?), will I have to wait 24 hrs to RE-enable dev mode?
@tezoatlipoca @grote at that point i'm already surpsised they did not make sideloading a paid feature ...

Real Robot Makes Debut in Programming Game
Sometimes the right tool for the right job appears almost out of nowhere. That was certainly the case for [Jonathan] who came across an unusual but well-designed robot at a secondhand shop. The robot needed a bit of work to get back into a usable condition, but after that it was ready for use. For such a unique machine, it needed a unique place to work as well, so in this build [Jonathan] uses it as a real robot to recreate a popular board game meant to teach programming to children.
In the original board game, called Robot Turtles, there are no actual robots. Instead, players use cards to control turtles to reach objectives in much the same way that a programmer would solve a similar problem with a computer. A board game with such a name almost demands a robot, so [Jonathan] found a larger playing surface in the form of soft matting blocks, each with a number or letter, that can be assembled into a grid. To make the game, he built a Python application on top of the interface he reverse-engineered in a previous build. It handles the robot interface, control, input, and a PyGame GUI. The game can either be played in real-time, or the robot’s moves can be queued.
In addition to keyboard input, the bot can also be controlled by putting cards from the actual board game itself on an NFC reader he made. [Jonathan] has a four-year-old at home, so he hopes that all of these projects will have an impression and encourage experimentation and discovery of computers and programming.
