@evan For a public / layperson audience I use "Fediverse", although I tend to use the endearment "Fedi". I sometimes use Open Web, or Open Social Web when discussing the concept.

- Fediverse for the larger ActivityPub ecosystem & people
- Social Web is mostly interchangeable with Fediverse / ActivityPub, but sometimes I also use loosely to include others depending on audience 😄

Social web is easy to understand for people that never heard federated social media.
It avoids people into thinking fediverse as if it was some scammy crypto project.

@evan I think "Social Web" is the best word. Fediverse ist second and Mastodon third. But if people understand anything, it's Mastodon. Thus I mostly use that in spoken language.

@hiker @Huubje @evan if we’re being pedantic here, then Outlook is a bad example. A good example would be using the word “escalator” instead of “moving stairs”.

For non-tech people, the chance of the word “Mastodon” ringing a bell is much higher than “Fediverse”.

In day-to-day interpersonal communication the goal is to be understood, not to be as precise as possible.

Most people know it as Mastodon where it is actually Fediverse and technically ActivityPub. This is where people lose track and start asking about the weather.

maybe I should use a different term tho since I don't want us thinking of it as separate. imo it's an attention layer for the web. any digital work we publish should be boostable. when that mindset takes hold, the closed platforms will seem anachronistic.

@evan Mastodon is the gateway term. Even technical people have an easier time wrapping their head around a single service than the idea of multiple types of interconnected apps.

If they get curious, I will go into the Fediverse.

@evan When I talk to people who wouldn't have a clue, I tend to call it "Mastodon", but I'd rather be more accurate and say "Fediverse" to those who know the term. "Fediverse" is just easier to say than "the ActivityPub network"

@ben @evan I usually call it the fediverse or fedi, especially since I'm not on mastodon.* If asked what that is, I will typically offer, "a largely volunteer-run decentralized social network of which mastodon is a part." I don't want to perpetuate the misconception that Mastodon is all there is to the fedi.

* I technically still have an old Fosstodon account that I fall back on when I'm having server issues, but it doesn't get much use.
