Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions for getting nice Python support in VSCodium, without relying on any Microsoft extensions, I'd appreciate it it.
I know what a good setup is for VS Code, but I'm hitting the limits of what is reasonable without some kind of editor assist, so I guess I'd better figure this shit out at some point.

@xgranade probably Astral stuff is your second best bet (not sure how well it works)

@whitequark I've been using it at the command line, and it really helps, yeah. Would still love something like jump to definition or other sorts of things I get with rust-analyzer.

@whitequark Oh, wait, there's an official extension now, I missed that! Thanks for the pointer on that! ♥

@xgranade @whitequark Unfortunately, one consequence of MS actually investing in a decent first party plugin is it eliminating a large chunk of the potential motivation for third party extension development. I believe even with Astral's tools, there is a heavy reliance on the MS extensions to integrate them into the editor.

As per @whitequark's suggestion, looking at Astral's Ty extension.

@xgranade @whitequark Oh I'd not heard of Ty before, will give that a whirl!
I've also been avoiding VS Code but didn't fancy Codium with the official extensions. Instead, I've been using PyCharm but it's... a lot. I learn more with less hand holding and opinions.
(just hobbyist stuff, nothing published)

@xgranade i am exactly this way but with docker.
- oh a cool new thing!
- sweet its on github and some folks are using it!
- lets see if theres a quickstart guide
- oh. it only comes as a docker container and the only way to use it is using docker
- welp, fuck that bullshit im out

@xgranade Same, but I also insist on performing this ritual when the first step is ‘npm install’.

@xgranade Consider yourself already lucky if the blog post wasn't written by a llm.

- back to catte memes@Viss Like, you may not like Docker, that's valid, but it's at least a tool that serves a purpose and not straight-up brain malware.

@xgranade it 100% absolutely if you have any network endpoints in the 172.16.0.0/12 range.

@xgranade it also is a massive impediment to anything that needs to have any sort of resiliency or stability because if you need to make ANY CHANGES WHATSOEVER to a container, you have to destroy the container to do that, so you go from a system on bare metal that can have uptime in years, to docker where if you need to remount a folder or something simple/trivial that would not mean downtime anywhere else - it means downtime using docker

@Viss There's a world of difference between a tool that's badly designed, even catastrophically so, for your use case, and active malware like Claude.

@xgranade im not diverting attention away from claude being a shitshow by mentioning docker. claude is absolutely a shitshow and i have even submit a talk to unprompted con titled 'claude is your insider threat'
im simply adding to the pile of fuckery and asshattery by including docker in the trashfire where it belongs
