That's billion with a B. So if you held out hope that filling out surveys or shitposting through it might turn this ship around, no. That much money has an event horizon.
Mozilla is cooked.

@jwz That's about 1000 person years of development. So you could get a team of say, 10 people working full time for 100 years, or you could increase the team size up to 100 people working full time for 10 years. That's a lot of actual Firefox development they are throwing away.
-
@jwz according to Mozilla they will spend $130 million on AI bullshit. The $1.4 billion number is their total reserves.
-
@jwz out of curiosity, what is a good, trustworthy, no nonsense upstart web browser these days?
@GreatBigTable @jwz For *some* definition of "good" (but fully satisfying the other criteria), I guess we're all heading back to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwise, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cello_(web_browser) or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCSA_Mosaic

@jwz I honestly thought you might have been exaggerating, but then I clicked through to the article...and jesus effing christ, the whole board need to be launched into the sun.

@jwz
They are not spending 1.4 billion on AI. This would be silly to spend all their money. But they will spend 20% of their annual budget on AI, roughly $120M. Still a lot of money. -
@jwz
Meanwhile the AI companies are burning the planet to build browsers from scratch as a benchmark.
https://cursor.com/blog/scaling-agentsThis is how we all lose.

@poujolrost
That's because it's not the real amount. This headline is wrong.
@jwz -

@csstrowbridge @jwz second vivaldi - &, yeah, i know it's built with chrome infrastructure, but they've sworn an anti-AI oath.

@slightlyoff @jwz When Mozilla crashes along with the AI bubble, maybe the developers worth saving can be rehomed under Servo, as I believe that is organized under the Linux Foundation and funded by the EU Sovereign fund, so there is some structure which could be expanded to cover the need, if primary maintainer ship for Firefox needed to move to a new stable org.

This is like when Sun was failing and people threw as much code as they could over the wall so they could catch it and build around it afterwards, spawning LibreOffice and several ZFS-based storage companies.

@jwz Their money comes from Google. They do what Alphabet tell them to do. This is the elephant in the room with Mozilla.
-
@jwz What is with their Goatse logo?
@earwigplanet @jwz Reach inside a gaping asshole and you find... Firefox.

@jwz Mozilla should just donate money to Servo and Ladybird.
