If you use the word “clanker” to talk about generative AI, I am immediately suspicious of you. This reads to me as, guy that is so racist that he can only experience the world through the lens of bigotry. It doesn’t seem like you actually have any legitimate objections to AI, you’re just super excited you found a group (real or imagined) that it’s socially acceptable for you to be racist towards. You would say the n word if you thought it was okay. That’s what I’m hearing from you
@danirabbit Oh! I hadn't heard this term before. Thanks for the heads-up.
-
@thomasfuchs If you call a rock a spic—something I’ve been called before—that’s still a slur and you’re still a racist.
Also maybe don’t whitesplain slurs to people. That’s bad form

@danirabbit Eh, it is okay to hate on things and groups that deserve hate because they actively harm and/or make lives harder for other people.
LLM-pocalypse is pushed on us (working class people) by the ultra wealthy to exploit us further. The hate towards genAI is in fact hate against them, not the tech itself.
Considering that capitalism can't be defeated anytime soon, I think venting some of the frustration with LLM hate is justified.
I see where you are coming from though.

@danirabbit@mastodon.online I always find it interesting when people immediately assume the least charitable interpretation. people tend to just make up pejoratives for things they dislike.

To be extremely clear, since this will probably break containment, I think LLMs and generative AI in general sucks really bad and is super bad for society and is doing a lot of damage. We don’t need to use the tools of white supremacy to convey that. You sound exactly like those people who blame the shit economy on immigrants. Why are you inventing a slur against an imagined group instead of attacking the white men pushing this shit

@danirabbit@mastodon.online @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io except that's a racial slur with history of oppression and violence where clanker is not. let's keep the plot here

@danirabbit girl I love you so much right now. Exactly this.

@danirabbit tbh, this is the first time I'm hearing that word, fascinating - it just shows I'm not a star wars fan, I had to find the history of it 😸

@danirabbit folks have used that word to target folks with some form of technology that helps some disability. that includes prosthetics that can move, etc., so it's most certainly part of that, yes

@navi that’s fucking terrible and I didn’t know about that. Another great using to avoid this kind of language

Oh is that where it's from? I thought it was just a generic term for "piece of junk machine" like "clunker" is often used to refer to a car.
-
@ada_magicat the term comes from star wars where droids are very much presented as people. to use "clanker" is to simultaneously humanize LLMs and then degrade them with a fictional racist slur.

If your response is, “LLMs aren’t people”. Yeah no shit. So why are YOU anthropomorphizing them for the specific purpose of emulating bigotry? This isn’t about the fucking LLMs. This is about your weird behavior. This is about you going out of your way to behave in a bigoted way towards a non-existent group just that you can do a bigotry and how fucking weird and gross you are for doing that

@danirabbit slop generators are not a “group”

@danirabbit This is further evidenced by the way that every slur for AI is clearly based on an existing slur just with a couple letters changed.
I'm not even willing to say most of them due to their obvious & unambiguous derivation from racial slurs.
I bet the people who came up with these terms thought of them as a "clever" play on words, but wow is it gross.

@danirabbit when the technofascists are claiming to be reinventing slaves, the response shouldn't be to express bigotry towards these imaginary slaves. Even if I think it's *extremely* unlikely, I'm always preparing for the possibility that they do the thing they pretend they're doing and in that case, we have to rescue some virtual persons. And it will be harder to do that if people habituated themselves to calling them slurs.

@thomasjwebb I don’t think they’re anywhere close to actually making a machine that can think. But yes exactly this. The white supremacist tech bros want slaves so bad and some people’s response is to bring back overt bigotry but point it somewhere else? Like what the fuck dude. We’re regressing as a society on racism and bigotry so bad

@danirabbit a lot of the time it seems to me that the people using "clanker" are also fooled by the illusion of sentience. It cannot be offended, so why the hell are you (generic you) insulting it as if it can be? If it could be offended then using slurs would be bad, and if it can't be offended then it's a waste of breath (keystrokes?)
