If your response is, “LLMs aren’t people”. Yeah no shit. So why are YOU anthropomorphizing them for the specific purpose of emulating bigotry? This isn’t about the fucking LLMs. This is about your weird behavior. This is about you going out of your way to behave in a bigoted way towards a non-existent group just that you can do a bigotry and how fucking weird and gross you are for doing that
@danirabbit a lot of the time it seems to me that the people using "clanker" are also fooled by the illusion of sentience. It cannot be offended, so why the hell are you (generic you) insulting it as if it can be? If it could be offended then using slurs would be bad, and if it can't be offended then it's a waste of breath (keystrokes?)

@alessandro well, Wikipedia says it is. I've literally never heard the term (nor the term you used for a car) - but I don't live in an English speaking country, so it's understandable.

@danirabbit Eh, it is okay to hate on things and groups that deserve hate because they actively harm and/or make lives harder for other people.
LLM-pocalypse is pushed on us (working class people) by the ultra wealthy to exploit us further. The hate towards genAI is in fact hate against them, not the tech itself.
Considering that capitalism can't be defeated anytime soon, I think venting some of the frustration with LLM hate is justified.
I see where you are coming from though.

@SymTrkl@anarres.family if you think everyone is consciously recognizing that there's a new slur that's acceptable to say and that's the reason people are using it, that is both extremely cynical and frankly, just a little delusional. absolutely raise your eyebrow at it, question it, but don't attribute to malice what could be ignorance.

Or how Osama bin Ladin blew up (or strongly encouraged the blowing up of) the ancient Buddhas before blowing up people. So it’s like they’re saying “see how racist I’m capable of being? this isn't to argue it's okay, their second post (https://mastodon.online/@danirabbit/116177479600560734) I thought was very well put, I just wish to push back on demonization and putting people in boxes when it's much more likely that this is simply something those people just never considered.
I think there needs to be some intentionality for actions to be representative of the person

@danirabbit I sometimes play an online game that pits humans against sci-fi robots. And some of the human players with microphones take obvious relish in referring to the robot enemies as "clankers."
I don't get it. I don't understand the glee in speaking a slur, even if it's a made up slur about unfeeling, imaginary entities. Who looks at the state of the world and says "Golly, it sure would be great to have some new slurs in here?"
I sure won't argue that old-fashioned real-world racism isn't a big factor, but there are enough people joining in, with a wide enough variety of accents, that it's hard to accept that as a complete explanation. Is there a slur-loving caveman hiding in each of us?
