If you use the word “clanker” to talk about generative AI, I am immediately suspicious of you.

If you use the word “clanker” to talk about generative AI, I am immediately suspicious of you. This reads to me as, guy that is so racist that he can only experience the world through the lens of bigotry. It doesn’t seem like you actually have any legitimate objections to AI, you’re just super excited you found a group (real or imagined) that it’s socially acceptable for you to be racist towards. You would say the n word if you thought it was okay. That’s what I’m hearing from you
@danirabbit I had to explain to one of these people what the word play on "wire back" is talking about

@danirabbit Thanks for bringing this up. I was totally oblivious to this issue, have spent some time reading and have become a bit more informed 🙌
I liked the approach in this article https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/sep/01/clanker-slur-against-robots-all-over-internet-is-it-offensive

“I’m not racist to real life people. I just fantasize about the idea of racism and want to reenact it”
Hmmmmmmmmmm
@danirabbit maybe it's just that I live under a rock, but I really appreciate a solid take on this that is decoupled from the "ai is an emergent lifeform" nonsense that this topic attracted when it initially arose.

@danirabbit Makes sense to me. This seems similar to knowing someone who gossips about folks behind their backs. It's hard not to wonder what they're saying about you when you're not around. They've demonstrated *who they are*, after all...

@letsbekind2 @SymTrkl @hardpenguin13
I think the more important context is that slurs for llms make no sense. The model can't hear you, so in effect any slurs used directed at an llm are only being read by whichever underpaid worker is responsible for reviewing the transcripts for training.
Derogatory terms for people using this tech to waste our time and attention are good however.
It's the difference between cursing out the pharmacy's phone tree and cursing the CEO of that company. -

@danirabbit had no idea that was a slur. Never used it, mind you, but had no idea. Thanks for this!

@danirabbit can recommend such people play Deus Ex Human Revolution/Mankind Divided
Let's see how you'd like being called «clanker» yourself, lol

If your response is, “LLMs aren’t people”. Yeah no shit. So why are YOU anthropomorphizing them for the specific purpose of emulating bigotry? This isn’t about the fucking LLMs. This is about your weird behavior. This is about you going out of your way to behave in a bigoted way towards a non-existent group just that you can do a bigotry and how fucking weird and gross you are for doing that
@danirabbit I had heard people use the term, but hadn't really thought about it like that. It makes a lot of sense though. No point in treating LLMs like they are human and it's much better to call out the people pushing them than the LLMs themselves. If you REALLY want to humanize the LLMs they are slaves being forced to do something they really aren't good at and aren't the villain. They are just being forced to do a role they aren't built for by bad people.
-
@danirabbit Eh, it is okay to hate on things and groups that deserve hate because they actively harm and/or make lives harder for other people.
LLM-pocalypse is pushed on us (working class people) by the ultra wealthy to exploit us further. The hate towards genAI is in fact hate against them, not the tech itself.
Considering that capitalism can't be defeated anytime soon, I think venting some of the frustration with LLM hate is justified.
I see where you are coming from though.
@hardpenguin13@mastodon.gamedev.place @danirabbit@mastodon.online yeah honestly I don't think stripping a group of unfeeling industrial machines of legitimacy when they harm society and destroy lives is necessarily that bad
I don't want AI technology legitimized in society anyway, that's gross and horrible for everyone, this "group" is just a bunch of algorithms running on computer hardware built on the back of exploited people and vulnerable communities anyway, it's contemptible tbh -
@letsbekind2 @SymTrkl @hardpenguin13 @liz You have to factor in that "giving orders and receiving a product" is something a boss does. To them, AIs are workers minus the flesh and the ability to strike. The parallel between slurs towards AI and racist or classist slurs is clear as water to me.
-
@ada_magicat the term comes from star wars where droids are very much presented as people. to use "clanker" is to simultaneously humanize LLMs and then degrade them with a fictional racist slur.
@matildalove Thank you for clearing that up. With this info the whole argument makes more sense.
-
@danirabbit thank you, this clearly articulates something I only had as a vague feeling
@ricci @danirabbit yes, same, thanks!
