Thinking about getting a linux laptop. Specifically, a laptop designed to support linux, i.e. hardware compatible with open drivers, etc. Also looking to buy used hardware.
I hear good things about the Lenovo X1 Carbon series, but how good is the linux support in practice? Is it just marketing? Does it vary by generation? Is it worth the price?

@zackbatist I don't know about the Carbon in general, but up to some time ago thinkpads were one of the most common laptop seen at linux community conferences, often in the hands of people with the ability to fix any compatibility issues (as long as it was some feature they wanted to use).
To me old thinkpads are definitely worth their price, but my computing needs are such that I'm usually fine for many years with thinkpads bought when they were old enough to cost less than 200 € (including most of the price of a new battery)

@valhalla Thanks! This is very helpful, and prompts me to consider what I actually want. I think this might be more of a transitional device for me, so less expensive and more "mainstream" is key for my needs

Alla gatta le hanno trovato una escrescenza alla narice sinistra, stiamo aspettando i risultati della biopsia, spero che la cura antibiotica elimini tutto altrimenti saremo costretti pure ad operarla!

#Macstodon now runs in the latest bleeding-edge build of the Snow emulator! And if you use Snow's built-in HTTPS stripping, then you don't have to configure WebOne or another proxy, just install Macstodon and start using it 😎
Thanks @twvd for the FPU fixes and all the other hard work you put into Snow! This is the kick-in-the-pants I need to get the next version of Macstodon out the door 🙂

Is this true? I've never heard this before. Nobody's ever asked me for my citizenship status when I applied for a job, save for the tax form I fill out for income tax withholding.
To blame the Canadian government as a whole for the employers hiring workers under the table under minimum wage seems to be ... incorrect, to put it mildly. Not that it doesn't happen, but the government can't do anything direct about under-the-table work.
